Edgar's prosthetic leg

Donation protected

We (Cathi Campbell & Cynthia Lagueux) are writing this request on behalf of Edgar Coulson, a local community sea turtle conservationist from San Juan de Nicaragua (SJN), located on the southeast coast of Nicaragua.  Edgar injured his foot and due to his diabetes, his leg had to be amputated below his right knee.  Edgar recovered well from his surgery and has been getting physical therapy for the past several months. Edgar would now like to get a prosthetic leg and is requesting financial assistance.
We first met Edgar in 1998 during a trip to SJN to survey a little-known sea turtle nesting beach that stretches approximately 40 km from the border with Costa Rica to the Karaslaya river mouth, called El Cocal.  Edgar has been working with us since that first year and has taken over more and more responsibility of conducting beach monitoring, raising awareness and educating local inhabitants, and obtaining support from local authorities.  Although his beach survey work will be much more limited, he would like to be able to return to SJN and continue conservation work in his community.  However, due to the rural conditions in SJN and to improve his mobility, he needs a prosthetic leg.
Edgar was born in the town of Greytown, Nicaragua, which was the original town in this southeast corner of Nicaragua, but it was destroyed during the Contra/Sandinista war in the 1980’s. After the war, the town of San Juan de Nicaragua was established at a nearby site.  Edgar returned to the area after the war and has become a respected leader in SJN, and as a native of the area and an older gentleman, his opinion and voice are important in the community.  He has stood-up to beach inhabitants who poach hawksbill eggs and kill nesting females, and he has been instrumental to the success of sea turtle conservation efforts at El Cocal by extending the amount of beach monitored; initiating a food incentive for in situ nest protection by beach inhabitants; and educating local school children and adults, community leaders, military, and police about sea turtles and their threats.
A prosthetic leg costs US$2,800.  To date, Edgar has been able to raise $100 from friends.  He does not have the means to pay the remaining cost of a prothesis because he has been out of work for the past year due to his leg amputation, so he is asking for your help to raise the remaining US$2,700 to pay for his prothesis. We hope you will consider helping Edgar so that he can purchase a prosthetic leg and go back to his community to continue his conservation work.
Please share Edgar’s request widely to family, friends, and colleagues so that we can help him get back to doing what he loves and increase sea turtle conservation in Nicaragua.
All funds raised from this effort will go directly to pay for Edgar’s prosthetic leg.
