On December 28, 2019, life as they knew it was forever changed for Wayne and Sue Perrett. Driving home on I-95, a car suddenly sideswiped them, sending Wayne and Sue’s car careening into the retaining wall. The car was totaled and Sue, who was stuck inside, had to be extracted by first responders who cut off the roof of the car to get her out. While Wayne’s injuries were not as severe, Sue ‘s injuries were life changing. She had a broken humerus and a fractured spine, along with other less severe injuries. Sue stayed in the hospital and had surgery on her spine, along with physical and occupational therapy. She was then transferred to a skilled nursing facility for further care and rehabilitation.
Finally, 7 weeks after the car accident, Sue was able to go home with a wheelchair, and had to wear a “turtle shell” back brace for 3 months while out of bed. She could not have any weight bearing on her left arm, with very limited range of motion. Needless to say, any walking is difficult. Due to Covid-19, Sue has to wait to get into St. Mary’s acute rehab to continue on her road to recovery. In the meantime, a therapist comes to the house 3 days a week to try and help Sue make progress in her recovery.
Due to this horrible accident, Wayne has had to become Sue’s full-time caretaker, leaving his job at Mirasol as a Golf Starter. He has had to modify their condo to accommodate their current situation and to make it wheelchair accessible and ADA compliant. The costs have been overwhelming. Just to name a few
· Remodeling the bathroom to be ADA compatible
· Installing pass through French door access to the bedroom from the living room
· Purchasing new adjustable beds
Other major expenses include
· Replacing their car with a wheelchair accessible van
· Out of pocket prescription drug costs
· Personal care supplies
Your contribution is truly appreciated, and will go directly to Wayne and Sue to help cover some of these expenses.
Thank you so much for your generosity.
