Edie's accessible garden
Hello! My name is Edie, I am a 29 year old disabled woman living in Scotland, UK with 3 fluffy companions.
Amongst my collection of illnesses, I struggle with Fibromyalgia, caused by living in a physically abusive home for 5 years between the ages of 13 and 18 and M.E (AKA Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) Unfortunately both of these illnesses seem to fight against each other and I spend most of my life in bed, with the blind down only showing a small amount of window to see the bird feeders in my garden.
A couple of years ago I got into plants as a hobby, because I could no longer do any of my other passions. I have now been homed in a "suitable" home that has a wonderful garden, and when I feel well enough to, sitting outside in the fresh air and listening to the sounds of nature and watching the local pollinators enjoy my plants is incredibly powerful to easing my darkest mental illness moments.
Unfortunately, my "suitable" home comes with a hefty (to me) 25cm step out the back. I do have a ramp on my front door, however I also have indoor cats, and there is no way for me to be able to exit the home and gain access again without at least one of the rascals escaping if I am alone (which is the majority of the time)
I would like to have an area of decking that is the height of my back door, so that I am able to sit out in the garden in my wheelchair. (My garden is incredibly uneven, and my wheelchair is unable to manage the terrain.) There will also be a ramp from the decking connecting to a paved path that already partially exists allowing me to use the rear door as an access point without the fear of escapees and accidental runnings over of paws!
After a lot of hassle with some previous contractors, I have found a local company that has given me £300 off the total cost in order to give back to the local community, along with the total being booked at a 20% off special as long as I paid the booking fee upfront. The work is booked for September 20th and comes to £1300.
