Edith Benavides Memorial
Donation protected
A bright light has gone out in the world, and in our lives. Edith's sudden passing left a community in shock, then sadness, and now in mourning. But, we don't grieve without hope for we know we'll see her smile again.
Her last employer, The YMCA, wrote the following:
"Edith was a lifelong Yuma resident and had a tremendous passion for working with youth. She devoted over 30 years as a childcare provider in Yuma and Somerton. Before working for Valley of the Sun YMCA, Edith served her community through the Boys & Girls Club. She was an active member of the Yuma community, serving as President of the local Optimist club. Edith was a foster mother and a strong advocate for youth in foster care. She always led with her heart and was someone others turned to for advice and a compassionate ear."
A friend penned this note on her Facebook today:
"One of my favorite people in the world passed on Saturday. She will be missed by so many! I will especially miss her calling or texting me to pray about something. She loved serving the community especially when it involved children."
Another friend:
"The Yuma community lost a beloved soul today. Edith Benavides
touched so many lives, myself and my family are included. She gave her heart and soul to thousands of children in Yuma through her work at the Boys and Girls Club, the YMCA and the Optimistic Club of Yuma.... just to name a few! We were kindred spirits with an unwavering love of New Kids on the Block! I'll miss you my sweet friend!"
Edith's impact on the community may never be fully known, but the outpouring of love in the last few days is an indication that it is larger than she would have ever imagined. A life lived loving others without judgment and without reservation is the legacy she leaves, and the example to follow.
We love you, Edith.
This memorial will be used to offset final expenses and will be managed by her niece, Celia Venegas.
