Edwin's Road to Recovery: A Family's Plea

Hello Family, Friends, and the Deaf Community,

My name is Nicola Foster King, and I’m a Deaf wife and mother to two amazing children, ages 4 and 3. My husband, Edwin King, who is also Deaf, has been our family’s rock and provider since we moved to America.

Five months ago, our lives were turned upside down when Edwin suffered a tragic accident. He sustained a fractured C-6 vertebra, along with multiple broken bones in his right arm and right leg. After spending four days in the ICU, he underwent surgery on his leg and spent three weeks in rehabilitation. For three months, he wore a neck collar, which has only recently been removed as he continues to show signs of recovery.

However, Edwin has no movement or sensation in his right hand—the hand he’s used his entire life. It remains numb, and he now has to learn to do everything with his left hand. Every day is a struggle, and I see how hard he’s working to adjust, even while in constant pain.

He is scheduled for surgery this June to repair the bone in his right arm—yes, it’s still broken after all this time. Can you imagine how painful and frustrating he is feeling? I mean everyday! His lifestyle and favorite hobbies, like going to the gym, have been taken away, and it’s heartbreaking to watch him suffer.

The doctors had hoped the brachial plexus nerves in his arm would heal on their own, but after extensive testing (MRI, X-ray, and EMG), the results showed no improvement. Still, we are staying hopeful and trusting in his strength and the support of our community.

Edwin is covered 70% by Medicare, but many of his medical expenses, therapy sessions, transportation needs, and childcare for our little ones are not fully covered.

This journey is far from over. And while we remain strong for each other, we’re reaching out to ask for your support. Any donation, no matter the size, will make a difference in helping us manage the financial burden and allow Edwin to focus on his healing.
