Hello everyone,
First, I want to say how blessed Keegan and I are with amazing people in our lives and have had the most wonderful summer filled with love, laughs, and dancing.
On to why we are writing this…I have been diagnosed with breast cancer. In a short timeframe we went from planning our future to dealing with this disease.
In the beginning of August a lump was found in my breast. I noticed it myself as there was a significant indentation. The initial physical exam did not leave us feeling positive. A diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound were ordered. Unfortunately, I was given a positive for breast cancer prior to a biopsy due to what they are seeing. Following the biopsy we were not given news we hoped for. I have invasive ductal carcinoma which has spread. They do not yet know the significance of advancement meaning more testing. Unfortunately, it not being localized means a lumpectomy will no longer be an option for the surgical course. We are waiting on one more test to decide if I will start my treatment with a mastectomy or chemo, however, both are on the table now. Due to the nature of my field of work (working in elementary schools) I was told I will likely need to be off frequently for the sake of my immune system during chemo treatments. We have both felt frustrated, angry, scared, but overall trying to stay positive.
We have already met my team lead (surgeon) and will be meeting with my oncologist in the coming weeks and are hopeful treatment will be expedited. The other layer we are addressing currently is fertility. We have contacted a fertility clinic in hopes of preserving our chances of continuing our lives with children. We are seeking all avenues of support but unfortunately insurance will not cover the cost. There are wonderful organizations that offer assistance to cancer patients that we are utilizing.
We are hopeful to, one day, start the family we have dreamed of. We are blessed to have been showered with love. Working within our means in the american medical system we are facing costs (fertility, missed work for myself (appointments, preserving my immune system during chemo, surgery) missed work for Keegan being there). If we don’t receive positive news your support will be greatly appreciated during our battle.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Asking for help isn’t easy for either of us but we have finally admitted we are there. Any support received (financial, kind thoughts, a toast over a Friday beer) we appreciate from the bottom of our hearts. If you feel comfortable please share this.
Thank you for all of your love and support,
Elizabeth & Keegan
