The Pursell's are raising funds to be used for Conor's psychiatric residential treatment. As many of you know, through out Conor's life he has struggled and seen many different doctors. Each has had different diagnoses. Diagnoses given are: autism, bipolar, OCD, ODD, Anxiety, Depression, ADHD. He has been in a special school through the Omaha Public Schools since 2nd grade. He is now in the 8th grade. Adolescence proved to be difficult with medication management and after 6 visits to in-patient hospitalization a very difficult decision was made to place him in residential treatment here in Omaha.
Since residential treatment is not covered by group health plans until 2015 we sought help from the State of Nebraska. At the prompting of a psychiatrist we consented to an affidavit to be filed with the court system to make him a temporary ward. This helped him get admitted into the residential treatment center.
What we found out at the initial court hearing was that if we did not contest the affidavit we requested on our behalf, our decisions would not longer carry the responsibility and weight of a parent. We thought we were ready to trade that to get Conor some much needed long-term care; however, should he not successfully complete the program here in Omaha, the State could ship him to the next level of care. Out of State!!! We decided to contest and to seek any other option of self-pay. Unfortunately, the State has not agreed with us paying and is preparing to fight us for the right to make decisions on Conor's care.
Tim and I are finally reaching out to our friends and family for:
#1 Prayer support. God has his hand in this and will see us through this. Pray, pray, pray.
#2 We need financial help. Residential treatment is very costly at $400 a day being a rough, minimal estimate. They are doing AWESOME work with him but it will be 3 to 6 months minimum. Insurance will kick in starting January 1, 2015 but it will be considered out of network.
We have never spoken about this in a public forum so much of this is going to come as a surprise. When you have a child with a "mental illness" that is not noticeable until it is really noticeable, it is extremely difficult. We have not seen our friends or stayed in touch like we should have over the past decade. All of our attention has been on Conor and what he needed for his care and on Will and what he needed to grow up in a positive home environment with an older sibling with some significant impairments.
Tim and I firmly believe in the responsibility of the parent to take care of the needs of their children and when help is needed to reach out to family. When family resources are exhausted, it is time to reach out to friends. Help us not reach out to the government to make decisions for our family that is our responsibility that God gave us.
With much appreciation,
Tim, Jennifer, Conor, and Will Pursell
