As with all things, Gene never let cancer get in his way and in the end he died on his terms. Gene passed away peacefully the morning of Saturday, April 9th, 2016 surrounded by his spouse, parents, brother and sister-in-law, and long time friend from high school. He held on until we arrived. He knows he's loved and went in peace.
All of Gene's services will be held at Queen of Heaven Mortuary & Cemetery in Rowland Heights. A gathering will be held to remember Gene on Thursday, 4/21/16, from 5 pm and 8 pm with a rosary at 7 pm. Funeral services will be on Satuyrday, 4/23/16 from 11 am to 4 pm and will include a visitation period for people to share and speak if they wish, a mass, a graveside service, and reception. You can also sign his personal guest book at the website mentioned above and leave messages, recall memories, and post pictures. These pictures and messages will eventually be compiled to create a memorial book which can be purchased through that website.
This GoFundMe campaign will remain open to not only cover the costs of services but most importantly to begin gathering funds to establish a scholarship in his name for individuals going to school seeking to work in a field that provides assistance to others and advocates for the rights of individuals. Gene spent a good portion of his life helping others and fighting for equality. Many aren't aware that he was honored at his graduation from UCR by receiving the Steven Shum Activism Award in 2001. We believe such a fund would be a wonderful way to memorialize his acts of courage and kindness while helping others to be able to do the same. In the event we are unable to create a scholarship fund, the proceeds collected will be used to be donated to a charity that the family believe's Gene would have wanted.
