A coffee of community

This is the second out of three projects to renovate the Ranger house. The first project is to build an office

At the border with Myanmar lies the Thoo Mweh Khee Learning Center, a school for Myanmar refugees. Most of the people here belong to the Karen ethnic group, who have been suffering from the world’s longest civil war since 1949.

Since June of this year, we’ve been establishing Ranger work here. Royal Rangers are Christian scouts who are active worldwide. Beyond fun activities, we aim to provide the students here with perspectives, encourage them to take initiative and responsibility, and impart values that will help them in their future lives. Here at the school in Thailand, we also offer translation, guitar, and language courses that benefit the leaders and provide them with opportunities for their future.

By now, around 30 leaders have joined the project, all of whom are motivated to advance the Rangers and care deeply for the children here. However, what’s missing is a dedicated space to meet, discuss plans, build community, and hold training sessions. Currently, we share the facilities with the rest of the school: trainings are often canceled because rooms are unavailable, and the ones we use are usually far too hot. Moreover, there is no space to meet outside of training and classes to build relationships. People and community is probably the most important thing in the culture here – the people have a special sense of community. No matter what kind of help someone needs, everyone is ready to give and assist. Even though the students themselves arrived with nothing, often have no money, and sometimes work on the fields on weekends, they give everything they have for the school and their friends.

Together with the leaders, we have decided to rent a house that includes a café. Most students live in large dormitories with up to 60 others. The café would not only be a place for community but also a space to retreat and find some peace. The problem is that we don’t have enough resources to furnish the interior. That’s why we need your help! With your donation, you can help set up this café so we can come together, build relationships, and create a space for retreat. All the leaders are already looking forward to the place and would be thrilled once it’s finally ready.
