¿Quién es Fabián?

Fabián es un niño costarricense de casi 5 años. Es alegre, consentido, cariñoso y ordenado. Le encanta jugar fútbol, andar en bicicleta y pasar tiempo con su hermano.

Desafortunadamente, con un mes de nacido Fabián fue diagnosticado con Atresia de Vías Biliares, una extraña enfermedad de baja incidencia, aún menor en niños varones.

¿Qué es la Atresia de Vías Biliares?

Esta enfermedad se presenta en recién nacidos y no se conoce su causa. Es progresiva y afecta las vías biliares fibrosándolas paulatinamente hasta afectar por completo el hígado, impidiendo el flujo normal de bilis y llevándolo a una cirrosis.

La cirrosis tiene 4 etapas, la cuarta llamada cirrosis descompensada lleva a la necesidad inminente de un trasplante. Actualmente, Fabián se encuentra en la etapa 3, cirrosis compensada.

Con 2 meses de nacido, Fabián fue intervenido con un procedimiento llamado Kasai, una medida paliativa para retrasar el trasplante y permitir que el paciente tenga una edad apropiada para este.

Fabián ya tiene la edad adecuada para su trasplante, pero para realizarlo necesita emprender un viaje que tiene un costo alto.

¿Adónde debe viajar Fabián?

El hospital local de pediatría que atiende a Fabián ofrece la cirugía con una tasa muy baja de éxito: 60% en la última década. Este dato preocupa a la familia de Fabián, por lo que decidieron investigar sobre el trasplante en otros países.

Luego de la investigación, Corea del Sur es el destino ideal para realizar el procedimiento, con una tasa de éxito del 100%. Pero emprender este viaje requiere no solo los gastos asociados al viaje, también altos gastos médicos.

La campaña “El Viaje de Fabián” busca unir esfuerzos para recaudar los fondos que este pequeño y su familia necesitan para concretar el trasplante y darle a Fabián una mayor probabilidad y calidad de vida con las mejores condiciones posibles.

Who is Fabian?

Fabián is a nearly 5-year-old Costa Rican boy. He is cheerful, spoiled, affectionate, and organized. He loves playing soccer, riding his bike, and spending time with his brother.

Unfortunately, when Fabián was just one month old, he was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia, a rare disease with low incidence, even lower in boys.

What is Biliary Atresia?

This disease occurs in newborns, and its cause is unknown. It is progressive and affects the bile ducts until it completely affects the liver, impeding the normal flow of bile and leading to cirrhosis.

Cirrhosis has 4 stages, with the fourth stage called decompensated cirrhosis, which leads to the imminent need for a transplant. Currently, Fabián is in stage 3 cirrhosis.

At 2 months old, Fabián underwent a procedure called Kasai – a palliative measure that delays transplant until patients reach the appropriate age.

Fabián is now the right age for his transplant, but to undergo the surgery, he needs to undertake a journey that comes with a high cost.

Where does Fabián need to travel?

The local pediatric hospital that is treating Fabián offers the surgery with a very low success rate: 60% in the last decade. This data concerns Fabián's family, so they decided to research transplantation in other options.

After the research, They concluded that South Korea, with a success rate of 100%, is the ideal location to undergo the procedure. However, embarking on this journey requires not only the expenses associated with the trip but also high medical expenses.

The "Fabián's Journey" campaign aims to bring together efforts to raise the funds that this little boy and his family need to make the transplant a reality and give Fabián a greater chance and quality of life, under the best possible conditions.
