Hi, my name is Denman Rooke. I'm tired of the same old politics from the government parties and stale 'independent' politicians in Galway City Council that do nothing for ordinary people. So, I've decided to run for my first election this June in the Galway City East ward under the People Before Profit banner.
As a socialist & activist, I will fight for workers. I'm an artist by profession and trade union activist & committee member with Game Workers Unite Ireland which is a part of Financial Services Union. I also spend my time with housing activism as a member of the Community Action Tenants Union (CATU) as well as local climate action, Palestine solidarity, and anti-racism activism.
With such massive income inequality in our society, a housing crisis, a cost of living crisis, climate crisis, and so much more, it is imperative we get socialists into our councils to build a better future for ordinary people. And that’s why I decided to run. I’m fed up with the likes of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and those who go into coalition with them failing us consistently in our governments and councils. If elected, I will use my platform on the council to fight for ordinary people which means affordable housing that is actually affordable, public housing on public land, more frequent and reliable public transport, safe and segregated active travel and cycling infrastructure, better public services, and a Galway that welcomes all.
If elected I will:
- Prioritise Building Public Housing on Public Land – Demand that the Galway City Council's development plan drastically increases the building of public housing.
- Oppose the Sale of Public Land to Private Housing Developers – Prevent the Council from giving away our public assets to private interests intent on making a profit on housing while ordinary people are forced to rent at unaffordable levels.
- Tackle Traffic & Emission Issues by Prioritising Safe Active Travel and Cycling Infrastructure – Push the council to properly invest in segregate cycle lanes and active travel to keep people safe from vehicles.
- Prioritise Free, Green, & Frequent Public Transport – Pushing the Council to invest in better public transport services that support our communities, not remove bus stops or routes or put them out to tender for private operation.
- Taking Care of Council Homes – Increase funding for the turn-over of vacant council homes, environmental retrofits, and repairs for Council tenants.
- Tackle Waste Management Problems by Bringing It Back into Public Ownership – Reverse privatisation, improve recycling services, cut prices.
- Support a Galway for All – Standing up for immigrants, migrants, & international protection applicants. Opposing the Direct Provision system. And welcoming all who come to live here no matter where they're from.
- I Will Refuse to Support Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil on the Council – For too long have these two parties held workers and ordinary people in a vice grip of neo-liberal ideology and prioritised private profiteer interests of landlords and the wealthy. It's time we had a socialist voice in the Council to stand up for workers, renters, and everyone else who have suffered under their policies & politics.
Unlike other politicians or political parties, I do not have the backing of business interests, landlords, or other wealthy donors, so I rely on small contributions from ordinary people like you. Every contribution helps, even if it's just €5 or €10.
What will your donation be used for?
This GoFundME will be used to fund my 2024 Local Election campaign. It will go to pay for the day-to-day things like leaflets, posters and zip-ties, and banners.
