INTRO

Mi chiamo Lorenzo Fonda e sono il marito di Elena Xausa, che è morta il 27 Novembre 2022 dopo aver combattuto un cancro all’appendice per quattro estenuanti anni.

Elena era un’illustratrice di talento eccezionale e una persona meravigliosa. Ha lasciato in eredità la sua creatività esplosiva e una moltitudine di persone che la portano profondamente nel cuore.

Ci sono molti progetti in cantiere per onorare la sua memoria, ma ho sentito la necessità di fare qualcosa per lei che fosse fisico, una presenza nel mondo reale; un monumento nel senso più tradizionale.

PIGROTTO

L’idea per monumento è venuta da una piccola scultura di argilla che Elena ha fatto nel 2017. È un cane con sei zampe e delle orecchie molto lunghe, e sta facendo un pisolino. Lo ha chiamato "Pigrotto".

Lei non aveva mai pensato di trasformarlo in un’installazione su larga scala, ma da sempre diceva che le sarebbe piaciuto poter vedere i suoi personaggi come grandi opere pubbliche. Lei non può più farlo—ma io sì.

Voglio creare una versione enorme di Pigrotto, e metterla sulla collina proprio sopra la casa dove è cresciuta Elena, a Marostica.

Incarnerà lo spirito di Elena, riposando dolcemente in un sonno perenne. Ma non voglio che sia solo un monumento a lei: l’idea è che Pigrotto diventi uno spazio pubblico che le persone possono visitare a ogni ora di ogni giorno, e che sia una ragione per riunirsi, passare del tempo nella natura ed essere a contatto con una rappresentazione unica dello spirito creativo. La gente sarà libera di toccare Pigrotto, di arrampicarcisi sopra, di appoggiarsi a lui, e di interagire in modi che spero possano far apprezzare la vita fino in fondo.

E in mezzo alla scultura pianterò un gingko biloba, l’albero preferito di Elena, che crescerà e condividerà le stagioni con lei e Pigrotto.

MATERIALI E PRODUZIONE

Le dimensioni della scultura saranno circa 8x8 metri, con un'altezza media di 1,5 metri. Il design di Pigrotto sarà il più simile all’originale possibile. Quello che probabilmente verrà modificato leggermente sarà la forma e l’altezza delle sue gambe, che saranno modellate per permettere a una persona di sedersi sopra. Servirà anche livellare un poco la base in modo tale da creare una superficie piatta che permetterà di posare la scultura sul suolo.

Il centro della scultura sarà stampato in 3D in polistirolo, e poi ricoperto da uno strato di vetroresina lucida. Il corpo sarà dipinto di bianco, mentre gli occhi e naso saranno rosso scuro o marrone, come le bacche selvatiche che Elena aveva raccolto nello stato di New York, e usato per il suo Pigrotto.

La scultura sarà realizzata in una serie di sezioni, in modo da poterla trasportare e installare facilmente. Una volta collocati i pezzi nella posizione finale, le giunture saranno coperte e lucidate, creando una superficie liscia e continua.

POSIZIONE

Per grande fortuna la proprietaria del terreno, Laura Burei, ci ha dato il permesso di installare Pigrotto sulla collina proprio di fronte la casa di famiglia di Elena, a Marostica. Era uno dei suoi posti preferiti dove giocare da bambina, e abbiamo continuato ad andarci dopo la diagnosi, per cercare un po’ di pace e sollievo.

Si chiama Monte Pauso ed è uno dei posti più iconici della zona. Pigrotto sarà messo in uno slargo coperto di erba e circondato da alberi di fichi e olive, e guarderà un castello di 700 anni.

COMPAGNIA DELLE MURA

L’organizzazione no-profit Compagnia delle Mura, che si occupa della manutenzione di tutta la zona intorno al castello di Marostica e le sue mura, si è offerta con entusiasmo di aiutarci col progetto. Non solo ci sosterranno con aiuto logistico e burocratico ma cureranno anche la manutenzione pratica di Pigrotto, in termini di pulizia della scultura, taglio dell’erba intorno, e tutti gli interventi che saranno necessari per mantenere il posto il più vivibile possibile.

Dato che ci stanno aiutando anche col crowdfunding stesso, se farete una donazione il beneficiario risulterà la "Compagnia delle Mura".

DONAZIONI IN ECCESSO

I fondi in eccedenza donati per costruire Pigrotto saranno devoluti all’AIRC, l’Associazione Italiana per la Ricerca sul Cancro. Dopo il successo della sua mostra personale al Museo Civico di Bassano, Elena ha organizzato un’asta delle sue stampe e raccolto 13.000 euro per l’organizzazione. Seguire le sue tracce è la scelta più naturale.

INTRO

My name is Lorenzo Fonda and I’m the husband of Elena Xausa, who passed away on November 27, 2022, after a journey with appendiceal cancer that lasted four strenuous years.

Elena was an exceptionally talented illustrator and a wonderful human being. She leaves a legacy of explosive creativity and a multitude of people who carry her deep in their hearts.

There are several things in the works to honor her memory, but I felt the urgency to make something for her that is physical, and a presence in the real world; a “monument” in the traditional sense of speaking.

PIGROTTO

The idea of the monument came from a small clay sculpture that Elena made in 2017. It’s a six-legged dog with very long ears, and he’s napping.

She named it “Pigrotto”, which could translate as “tiny cute lazy creature”. She never intended it to be a large-scale installation, but she was so passionate about the idea of them and often said that she would have loved to turn her playful characters into huge public sculptures. She can no longer do it now but I do.

I intend to create a large-scale replica of Pigrotto and place it on the hill just above the house where she grew up in Italy, Marostica.

It will embody Elena’s spirit, gently dozing off through her forever sleep. But I don’t want it to just be a monument to her: - the idea is that Pigrotto will be a public space that people can visit, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and that it becomes a reason for people to get together, enjoy being in nature and around a truly unique representation of the creative spirit. People will be free to touch him, climb on him, lean on him, engaging in spontaneous interactions that I hope will inspire them to enjoy life to the fullest.

And in the middle of the sculpture I will place a ginkgo Biloba tree, Elena’s favorite tree, that will grow and will share the seasons with her and Pigrotto.

MATERIALS AND PRODUCTION

The sculpture's dimensions will be about 24x24 feet, with an average height of 4,5 feet. I will keep Pigrotto’s design as close as possible to the original. What will be possibly slightly modified is the shape and height of his legs, which will be modeled to accommodate a person sitting on them. Some leveling of the base surface will also be required in order to create an even surface that can be placed on the ground.

The sculpture’s core will be made of 3D-printed polystyrene and will be then covered by a layer of slick fiberglass. The body will be painted white while the eyes and nose will be a dark brown/red, like the wild berries Elena picked from bushes in New York state and used for the original Pigrotto.

Pigrotto will be built in several sections, to make it easier to transport and install. After positioning the pieces in the final location seams between each section will be covered and polished, creating a smooth continuous surface.

LOCATION

We were incredibly lucky that the owner of the land, Laura Burei, gave us permission to put Pigrotto right on the hill just in front of Elena’s family home in Marostica. This was one of her favorite playgrounds when she was a kid, and we kept visiting it together after her diagnosis to find some peace and respite.

It’s called Monte Pauso and it’s one of the area’s most iconic places. Pigrotto will be placed on top of an opening that is covered in grass and surrounded by olive and ficus trees and will be facing a 700-year-old castle.

COMPAGNIA DELLE MURA (THE WALLS' FELLOWSHIP)

The no-profit organization Compagnia delle Mura, which cares for the area around Marostica's castle and its walls, enthusiastically offered to help us with the project. Not only will they provide us with logistical and bureaucratic support but they will also take care of Pigrotto's practical maintenance, organizing the sculpture's clean-up, grass-cutting, and all the other interventions that will be necessary to keep the area as neat as possible.

Since they're also helping us with this very crowdfunding, if you'll make a donation you'll see that the beneficiary will be noted as: "Compagnia delle Mura".

EXCEEDING DONATIONS

Any funds that will exceed what we need to build Pigrotto will be donated to AIRC, the Italian, Foundation for Cancer Research. After her successful personal retrospective at Museo Civico di Bassano, Elena organized an auction of all the prints of her works and collected 13,000 euros that she donated to the organization, so it only makes sense that we keep up with her wish to donate to them.
