ELi Sports Coverage 2021-22
Tax deductible
Welcome to East Lansing Info’s (ELi) 2021-22 sports coverage GoFundMe!
ELi seeks to expand our coverage of East Lansing High School varsity sports for the 2021-22 school year, and to ensure we can do that, we’re seeking to raise $15,000 by August 26 — the start of the fall sports season.
Here’s what you need to know.
Reaching our $15,000 goal will allow ELi to more than double our sports coverage output from a year ago while bringing new community-centered sports resources.
In 2020-21, ELi published 30 sports stories. At around $200 per story — $100 for the reporter, $50 for the photographer, and $50 for editing and overhead — it cost ELi approximately $6,000 to produce the sports coverage we did in 2020-21.
That money came from ELi’s regular budget, but increased and in-depth sports coverage goes beyond the scope of what we fundraise for during our annual sustainability campaigns: regular coverage of local government, the East Lansing Board of Education, and investigative reporting. In order to expand our coverage, we need your support!
The money from ELi’s regular budget and mostly paid for Sports Editor Andrew Graham and lead sports photographer Gary Caldwell to cover various teams and events. They brought you stories from the football teams playoff run to the boys and girls track teams excelling. But we know there are stories that didn’t get covered and teams still to be written about. One of our main priorities in expanding our sports coverage is ensuring coverage of every ELHS team, and that’s why we’re aiming for $15,000.
Here’s a breakdown of the various levels of funding and the corresponding coverage ELi can expect to produce.
The exact number of stories and their subject matter remains at ELi’s discretion. It is our goal to cover every varsity team in 2021-22.
- $1,000 to $5,999: Limited and light coverage of some varsity high school sports, a scores page, and a youth sports resource page (explained below).
- $6,000 to $7,999: All varsity teams covered once, light coverage of the marching band, a scores page, and a youth sports resource page.
- $8,000 to $12,999: All varsity teams covered (including the marching band) at least once with some additional coverage at ELi’s discretion, a scores page, and a youth sports resource page.
- $13,000 to $14,999: All teams covered (including the marching band) once with most — if not all — likely being covered more than once, a scores page, and a youth sports resource page.
- $15,000-plus: Any funds raised beyond the $15,000 goal will still go toward ELi’s sports budget and enable additional coverage. (Remember that $200 equals one story.)
In short: The more we raise, the more coverage we’ll be empowered to bring.
ELi also aims to provide sports resources for the community.
As outlined in the breakdown above, ELi will be introducing a scores page sometime prior to the start of this fall season. It will be a one-stop shop for all your Trojan scores and results, crowd-sourced from volunteers. If you’re interested in volunteering to share scores and results for a specific sport (or sports), please email our sports editor, Andrew Graham, at [email redacted]s to learn more. Scores will be updated each regularly to stay as up-to-date as possible, but the accuracy of the scoreboard depends on how quickly scores and results are relayed to ELi.
Additionally, ELi wants to provide a central hub for information about youth sports opportunities, from camps to clubs and everything in between. We see how much kids benefit from having these youth sports and recreation opportunities, be it a week of summer basketball camp or joining a club soccer team or other opportunities in the area. We hope to provide the community with a place to find useful information about the available youth sports and recreation opportunities.
So please donate today and help us reach our goal of $15,000!
As a 501c3 nonprofit, ELi cannot do this work without the generous financial support of our community. We take pride in getting to highlight the achievements of local students and teams, and in paying local people to do that work.
With so many thriving teams at ELHS alone to cover, we know there’s more to do and we’re confident with the support of the community, we’ll have the dedicated sports budget to do it.
So one last time, please donate to our campaign — any amount helps: $10, $25, $50, or whatever you choose — share this with your friends (or benevolent billionaires) and take away this message from us at ELi: THANK YOU!
Best,
