Elizabeth Harkes & Nathan Schafroth Scholarships

I launched this fundraiser around midnight last night, and it took merely 12 hours for us to cover the scholarships for this year and next year (including personal checks).

We are so happy this has come to fruition, and we intend to do more fundraising as we go forward, starting with an event which will coincide with our 30th reunion events in 2024 (to be announced). Thank you all!

Rena and the Class of 1994

The MCS Class of 1994 has set out to fulfill a promise we made two years ago, when we gathered to mourn the loss of our dear friend, Nathan Schafroth.

We pledged to start a scholarship in Nathan’s name, as well as an award in our friend Elizabeth Harkes’ name, who we lost in 2008.

If you were lucky enough to know them, you will know that, while they were each their unique and singularly wonderful selves, they both possessed some similar qualities: they were friends to all, their friendship knew no bounds and no limitations, they thrived on laughter and they possessed a love for life that was infectious.

While we lost our friends when they were much too young, we have created two scholarship awards in their names, to carry on their memory far into the future.

Two members of the MCS Class of 2023 will be the first to be awarded these annual scholarships of $1,000 each.

This has been a long time coming, and we are all so excited to see this finally happening.

We have set up an account at NBT Bank, created by myself and Michael Shultes under the name Class of 1994 Memorial Scholarship Fund. Every cent we have from this gofundme will go to the scholarship awards. Any leftover money from this year will roll over for next years awards. We plan to do some annual events (golf tournament, fundraising concerts) to replenish the awards going forward.

If you are able to donate to this scholarship fund we would be so grateful, as the awards will be going to students who also possess the same wonderful qualities as our friends.
