Elizabeth's fight against SMAS

Elizabeth is fighting for her life against Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS), a rare condition that occurs when the first part of the small intestine is compressed between two arteries, blocking the small intestine. In Elizabeth's case, the symptoms have been severely debilitating and life threatening.

Elizabeth is a very sweet and funny 13 year old. Prior to SMAS she was a fiesty Jiu Jitsu queen and a horse riding, cattle sorting farm girl.

Elizabeth and her family have made many trips across the province to see different medical experts and emergency rooms to get the help they need. In December they were told that there are no further options for Elizabeth in Saskatchewan. They will need to travel out of province, or maybe the country, to find a team of medical experts who are trained to deal with this rare condition. It is estimated that only 0.013% of the world's population has the type of SMAS that Elizabeth does, so there are very few surgeons that have ever done the type of surgery that she needs and it is very complex. There is a teaching surgeon that Elizabeth's mom has been in contact with that is willing to come here to train a surgeon in Saskatchewan but they haven't been able to find a surgeon here yet that's willing and able to do it.

The expenses have been adding up for this family for years and they have a very expensive near future to get Elizabeth the life saving surgery that she needs. They need our help. Let's be Elizabeth's village and get her back where she deserves to be: in school with her friends, Jiu Jitsu, and horseback riding.
