The high cost of home renovations led Nora El-Khouri Spencer to discover the joy of doing projects herself. Eventually, she realized that sharing this knowledge with other women could help her entire community. Now, her free training program helps women build family-sustaining careers in construction while also enabling seniors to age safely in their homes by making needed modifications. It’s an innovative approach that she hopes will change the face of a traditionally male industry -- and improve countless lives. Since July 2020, Spencer’s nonprofit, Hope Renovations, has provided free skills training to more than 40 women and nonbinary individuals, helped two-thirds of them find jobs in the construction trades and done more than 100 home repairs for seniors, many at low- or no-cost.
