Elvie: Supporting Milk Banks This Christmas

To all who donated - thank you! Your generosity throughout this campaign has helped so many families and vulnerable babies this winter.

⁠With your donations, and Elvie's contribution, we've raised £18,782 for the Human Milk Foundation throughout December 2020.

If 2020 taught us anything, it's what really matters in life – the little acts that we can do to support one another.

Which is why, in December 2020, Elvie promised to match monetary donations made to the Human Milk Foundation, for a truly life-saving service that provides safe, screened, donated human milk to those in need – especially to premature and fragile infants, who are particularly vulnerable and at risk.

But, let's face it, 2020 was a hell of a year and we could all use a little extra support. So, we went one step further than matching donations - and Elvie gave an extra £12,000 to the Human Milk Foundation.⁠⠀

The little things we can do to make a difference? They aren’t so little after all.

What your money will help to do:

£10 will produce one milk donor onboarding pack
£20 feeds a premature baby with donor milk for a day
£50 keeps volunteers delivering milk for a whole week
£100 will recruit and on-board one milk donor, feeding up to 20 babies

About the Human Milk Foundation

Much like donated blood, donor human milk can be life-saving for tiny babies. A leading cause of death in premature babies is a condition called necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) which kills more babies each year than childhood leukaemia. Human milk protects babies against developing NEC, so if a mum is unable to produce her own milk, because of illness, cancer or low supply, safe screened donor milk from a human milk bank acts like a medicine to protect the baby. Currently donor milk is a scarce and precious resource that is rationed to only the sickest, tiniest babies meaning hundreds of babies sadly die each year. It doesn’t have to be this way. We believe every baby who could benefit should have access to donor milk and if we can raise vital funds we can scale up our services to make this a reality. We currently supply 37 hospital neonatal intensive care units with donor milk and have supported 300 families in the community, supporting parents through times of crisis with specialist lactation support to help mums to breastfeed their babies wherever this is possible. We also lead groundbreaking research in human milk science.

The Human Milk Foundation believes in a world where all infants have access to human milk through implementing breastfeeding support services alongside access to donor human milk. Every pound raised will help us get one step closer to our goal and change the lives of thousands of families.
