Emergency Flood Relief for Bukonzo Joint Coop Union
Donation protected
Starting May 6th, severe flooding and landslides hit western Uganda in the communities where Bukonzo Joint Cooperative Union members live.
To date, the flooding and landslides have killed 29 BJCU members and displaced 716 people from 192 households in Buhuhira, Kitabona, and Kyondo Ibimbo micro washing stations. Many children have also died in the landslides, and three children are in critical condition at the nearest hospital.
From Baluku Robert, GM of BJCU (regarding the displaced): "Nothing to eat as they have lost food crops, clothes, mattresses and they have deep sorrows in their hearts of losing relatives in mudslides."
As of May 9th, no NGOs or government programs have offered assistance, so we are working to send funds to BJCU in order to provide emergency relief for BJCU and the community.
Please give as you can, and/or pass this along directly to those you think might also be interested in donating. Unfortunately, BJCU is in a region particularly susceptible to flooding and climate disasters, and this is not the first time the group has suffered from climate-related disasters in recent years.
Per BJCU's attached request, we're raising funds for basic food/meals and household items. Thank you for joining in these efforts. We will rely on our trusted partners of 10+ years, the leadership team of BJCU, to disburse the items as the community needs.
