Emergency Fundraiser for East African Queer Woman

Donation protected
This fundraiser is organized by queer East Africans and allies in the diaspora to collect much needed mutual aid funds to be distributed to a queer east african person to support their physical and mental health as they attempt to rebuild their life.

The aforementioned individual has had to flee her home country and begin the long and difficult journey of seeking asylum in Kenya (a place already inundated with queer Ugandans fleeing the recent passing of one of the world’s harshest anti-gay laws).

She is in need of funds to access stable housing, visa and potential asylum fees, necessary mental health resources, and food security.

This individual, and many more in their communities, have faced the lifelong stress of existing as a queer person in a country that denies their inalienable human rights through constant discrimination & homophobic legislation.

Their day-to-day reality has become increasingly urgent and precarious. Please donate, share and amplify this fundraiser with as wide a community as you can ❤️

Context:

LGBTQ+ individuals face unjust and inhumane discrimination all over the globe. Our East African siblings know this painful reality all too well and are calling upon us to facilitate a mutual aid fundraiser on their behalf.

The queer community in East Africa has been faced with unrelenting queerphobic attacks the last half of 2023. Although violence isn't a new experience for queer folx, increased activism and attempts at organizing safe spaces, along with the devastating effects of multiple wars raging in the region have created the perfect storm for an unprecedented wave of violence and hostility.

Being a member of the LGBTQ+ community not only carries a punishment of 15 years in prison; these past 6 months, religious zealots have been organizing online and in person to call for the violent harassment and death of anyone perceived to be queer. These individuals have led to several queer folx being doxxed on social media, harassed and attacked in their homes and schools, and in extreme cases, jailed and fleeing their home countries for safety.
