Emergency funds for undocumented families -Covid19
Donation protected
Dear friends,
We are raising funds to help support undocumented and marginally documented immigrants in the Knoxville community during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The pandemic will intensify the vulnerability of undocumented people in our community. Many will lose their jobs, face a health crisis, and have difficulty paying for basic needs. Even as undocumented and marginally documented people contribute immeasurably to our community, state and federal policies prohibit them from accessing the social safety net. Undocumented people can’t receive unemployment benefits and many other state and federal resources, including the federal government’s stimulus package. Many do not have healthcare.
Please help us help our community by donating and sharing this fundraiser with your networks. We know that the funds we raise will likely be inadequate to meet the need. Still, we hope that small gifts of direct aid will provide some concrete help and demonstrate social solidarity in this time of physical distancing.
Families seeking emergency relief during this public health crisis will complete a short application, which will be reviewed and approved by a committee of community volunteers. Our basic principle is to help those in need whose immigration status excludes them from most other sources of disaster relief. Funds will be received by AKIN's treasurer (Mary Ann Reeves) and then distributed to undocumented and marginally documented families in our community to help them pay bills, buy food, and receive medical attention. Any funds leftover after the Covid-19 pandemic will be maintained by AKIN and used for future direct support of undocumented and marginally documented people in our community.
If you or someone you know is undocumented or marginally documented and in need of help, please call Centro Hispano at [phone redacted] to complete the application in English or Spanish.
Thank you for your support!
