Emerson's Neurotherapy
As many of you know, Emerson has autism. He was diagnosed at age 6, and since that time we have navigated autism's unique obstacles with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, personal education, and supplements. Emerson seemed to progress well with our family's unified effort to support his needs until about six months ago when his mental state and accompanying behaviors took a sudden dive. Everything uniquely autistic about him seemed to be amplified, including his sensory issues, insomnia, aggression, and inability to make decisions. In his mounting exhaustion, frustration, and guilt, he grew increasingly depressed and beyond our reach. We needed to find him help and specifically the sort that would not traumatize him further. At this juncture we discovered a clinical psychologist specializing in autism and neurotherapy. Although this treatment option is not covered by insurance, we opted to pursue it, trusting it to address the fundamental issues of his brain's wiring rather than symptomatic behaviors.
Emerson has had seven neurotherapy sessions since his initial brain mapping, and the results have been immensely heartening. Although the therapy fatigues him, even in his exhausted state we have seen an increased ability to self-analyze, monitor feelings, and self-soothe. More than that, however, we've seen him smile and enjoy human interaction once again. We would love to continue these therapy sessions, but at $250 each, we have exhausted our Health Savings Account. We are reaching out to our community of friends and family, hoping that by way of donation, Emerson can maintain his treatment plan of two sessions per week until our HSA refills. Thank you for any support you are able to offer. Emerson--and the rest of us by extension--will greatly benefit from his continued improvement.
With sincere appreciation,
Scott, Rebekah, Emerson, and Silas Duplisea
