Help Emery’s parents during this difficult time
Donation protected
Hi my name is nicola and I am a friend and coworker of emery’s mom Alex Kenwright and dad Derrick Kenwright (mount pleasant police officer). Emery has to have brain surgery Jan 9, 2024 and her parents will need to stay home from work and there will be additional costs from the surgery. If you can help at all, any donation is welcomed as we are hoping to lighten their financial load. Funds will go directly to hospital expenses and then anything left will go to the family to bridge the gap from being out of work.
Here is their story and how they got to where they are today: Emery & her family were in the car one night on the way home from a soccer game and Emery began yelling in the back seat that her head was hurting. She continued to complain of her head hurting over the next two days. It was then Alex decided this seemed abnormal and placed a call to Emery's pediatrician. They had her come in right away for an exam. They placed a neurology consult, and referred her to an Eye Specialist. Her eye exam was normal, but the neurologist thought an MRI of her brain was necessary. On 11/8 Alex & Derrick took her for the MRI. Later that day they received a phone call from neurology and Emery was diagnosed with Chiari 1 Malformation. Neurology then placed a consult for Emery to see neurosurgery and have a cervical MRI done. After completing her second MRI on 12/6 Emery was seen by her neurosurgeon, and her parents were made aware that Emery was going to need surgery. Her official diagnosis is Chiari 1 Malformation with narrowing of the foramen. Emery is scheduled for Foramen Decompression surgery on 1/9/2024. The plan is for her to be admitted at MUSC's Shawn Jenkins Hospital for 3-5 days. Alex and Derrick will need to be home with her for 2-4 weeks postoperatively, and will return to neurosurgery for a follow up appointment.
