Emily Mitchell's medical fund

In February 2012, Emily started searching for answers to why she was having bouts of vertigo and tinnitus (ringing in the ear). She was told it was allergies, water trapped in her ear, an infection and went from treatment to treatment without resolution.

By January 2015, Emily had lost most of the hearing in her left ear. Despite being dismissed and told it was nothing to worry about by several physicians, Emily continued to pursue answers. That August, she found an ENT doctor who ordered a MRI. By that time, Emily was pregnant with her second child and the MRI would need to wait until after he was born. In January 2016, she was diagnosed with an Acoustic Neuroma, a brain tumor that starts in the cells that wrap around the nerves in the ear.

Emily started radiation therapy shortly after giving birth to a beautiful and healthy son. She chose radio surgury over the more invasive surgical removal so she could tend to her newborn.

Emily drove from Rockford to Chicago 5 days a week for six weeks to complete her treatment during her maternity leave so she could return to work as planned. After treatment, Emily suffered from debilitating headaches and extreme bouts of dizziness. Despite being frustrated with her slower than planned recovery, Emily returned to work.

In late October, Emily started to experience extreme side effects including facial paralysis that made it so she could neither open her eyes nor speak, as well as painful facial spasms and facial palsy. Luckily each time the effects were temporary, but these terrifying experiences left the family worried about what might come next.

On Tuesday, November 8th, Emily met with her doctor to discuss her symptoms and review her latest MRI. They have a plan of action that will either take Emily through recovery or down the path to surgery. Part of their plan of action is for Emily to go on medical leave.

Emily will go on Family Medical Leave starting immediately. That means that she will get 50% of her base pay and will now have to cover the full $900 monthly  insurance premium.

As you can imagine, losing her insurance at this time would be catastrophic for Emily and her young family. This fund is intended to keep her fully covered through the next six months. The money would be used to pay for insurance premiums. While Emily thinks that her family can get by on her 50% salary, any additional funds would be used to cover the family's day to day expenses.
