Emily Naykene for Ghana Medical Relief: The Lifeline Fund
Fiscaal aftrekbaar
In underprivileged communities across Ghana, thousands face life-threatening illnesses without access to basic medical care—no clinics, no doctors, and no medicine in sight. Even if it wasn't recent, many of us can recall a trip to the doctor's office. Maybe as a child receiving vaccines, or as an adult, receiving a diagnosis that brought relief, concern, or clarity—either way, we knew help was within reach. For many individuals in communities like these, that isn't the case, or even close to it.
My name is Emily Naykene, the 15-year-old daughter of a healthcare professional. My father, a man born and raised in Ghana, instilled in me the same passion for healthcare he holds himself. In July 2023, I had the privilege of joining a mission organized by the Ghana Medical Relief (GMR) in Tamale, the Northern region of Ghana. It was an experience that opened my eyes to both the immense need and the incredible impact that compassionate healthcare can have. I'll never forget the woman I met two years ago. She was one of the first patients in the dentist's office, complaining of a small toothache and pain in her hip, hoping only for some pain meds and to send her back on her way so she could work and provide for her children. Little did she know, her condition required a tooth extraction, and the small pain she complained about in her hip was due to a life-threatening condition.
This medical mission trip wasn’t just a volunteer effort; it was a lifeline for people who have been overlooked for far too long. Without the work of Ghana Medical Relief, that woman may not have lived to be the mother her children needed, or the community member that consistently gave back. Her story is just one of many—proof that even the smallest efforts can lead to a life-saving impact. The efforts that the healthcare professionals affiliated with Ghana Medical Relief make are life-changing. From pharmaceuticals to pediatric care to dire surgeries, this organization provides comprehensive, compassionate medical support to those who would otherwise go without. I plan on joining this phenomenal group again this summer, to Berekum, in the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana, but that would only be possible with the help of people like you!
If you're able, please consider donating. All donations go straight to the Ghana Medical Relief. Your contribution could be the reason someone else gets a second chance. Thank you. Please check the link for more information! Ghana Medical Relief Website
