Dearest family and friends,

It breaks my heart that our good friend Paul has come face to face with an unimaginable tragedy. His 3 year old daughter, Emily, has been diagnosed with a terminal, inoperable brain tumor called DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma) located in her brain stem. Just 6 weeks ago she was a seemingly healthy little girl with a bright future ahead of her, and now her outlook is grim. While we’re all optimistic and praying for the best, statistics say that 10% of children survive 2 years following diagnosis; less than 1% survive 5 years. Unfortunately, she has been given 9-12 months to live.

As you can imagine, this is an extremely tough time for Emily and Paul as they navigate the uncertainties of their situation. As most are preparing for Christmas with family and friends amidst an already trying year, Emily is fighting for her life. On Nov 24th, she underwent surgery to place a VP shunt in her head to relieve the onset of pressure related to DIPG and remains at Children’s Oakland hospital- oncology center, where she also spent her 3rd birthday on 12/1.

As a parent, I can’t imagine the level of helplessness Paul is experiencing; what thoughts are racing through his mind; and the unforgiving roller coaster of emotions he’s feeling daily. If you’re a parent or a guardian, I’m sure you can empathize. Can I ask that you keep Paul and Emily in your prayers? That both of them find some peace and understanding through this time when there are more questions than answers. Outside of the toll caused by the mental and emotional stress related to this situation, there will certainly be a financial burden that Paul will have to endure through this ordeal. The financial burdens alone will be throwing salt in wounds that will never heal. Paul doesn’t deserve to foot that alone.

If you feel it in your heart to donate any amount, I’m sure both Paul and Emily will be humbly appreciative of your love and support. Let’s band together as a village and be the light that supports Paul and her through this; and may this act of kindness be the glimmer of light that overshadows the darkness of this season for them.

Thank you
