Emily's future: Recovery and art therapy tuition.

Meet Emily. Three years ago, she underwent life-saving surgery to remove a pituitary tumour from the base of her brain, after suffering for over five years with undiagnosed Cushing’s disease. The delay in treating this disease left her with disability and ongoing health challenges, significantly impacting her life. These include debilitating pain, mobility and cognitive issues, over seven stone weight gain and a series of complications, including adrenal crises, thyroid problems, enlarged heart valves, gall bladder issues, and severe bone damage (necrosis).

Despite her fight for recovery, Emily will require associated surgeries and has been left with permanent health conditions that prevent her from living the life she once knew.

As well as the physical hurdles, Emily has also had to leave her teaching career, as the tumour caused seizures, leaving her unable to work full-time and resulting in her losing her house. Emily had previously led countless community projects in the UK and abroad, she is currently enrolled as a trainee art therapist and looking to the future, she wants to continue making a difference by working alongside people affected by trauma and illness, as a qualified art therapist. The cost to complete the Master’s degree is nearly £20,000 and Emily is not eligible for a government loan, due to previous training she is unable to use.

She just needs a chance—a chance to heal and get back on her feet, to work, and to continue giving back to the community she loves.
