"Grief expressed out loud, whether in or out of character, unchoreographed and honest, for someone we have lost, or a country or home we have lost, is in itself the greatest praise we could ever give them. Grief is praise, because it is the natural way love honours what it misses." - Martin Prechtel

Richard made me do it….

A walk to remember. To give thanks and pray.

Our darling, disco dancing, viking spirited Richard passed away very suddenly at just 41 years old in August last year. Richard was one of those rare beauties who would light up every room with his abundant energy, love of adventure, that cheeky smile, his utterly infectious mischievousness and big bursting heart full of love and wonder.

Richard was one of my oldest and dearest friends, we met back when we were just 19 when we started working together. I feel blessed to have shared so many precious journeys with Richard and his beautiful husband Henry, mum, dad, sister and all of his amazing friends over the years.

Walking to raise money for the things closest to Richard’s heart, to raise awareness of Richard’s underlying condition and in the hope that we can create more support for those that are faced with sudden loss.

I’m walking the South West Coastal path and camping along the way, 630 miles, god help me!

I can hear Richard laughing as a write this….

The South West Coast Path is perhaps the UK's ultimate challenge for the long-distance hiker - a 630-mile adventure around the coastline of England's south west peninsula. Starting at Minehead in Somerset it runs along the coastline of Exmoor, continuing along the coast of North Devon, passing through Cornwall and ending in Dorset.

Richard died suddenly and unexpectedly due to an undiagnosed congenital heart defect on 13th August 2022. His husband, Henry, is setting up a foundation in his memory to support various causes close to Richard's heart. The foundation will also work to help research to diagnose those who may have Richard's condition and support widows, family and friends grieving a sudden tragic loss.

The foundation is called 'Le Petit Singe' - 'The Little Monkey', an endearing term Richard and Henry used for each other but also one that speaks to the spirit of Richard, a cheeky compassionate explorer who loved to share life and experiences with everyone around him. The foundation website can be found at www.lepetitsinge.co.uk.

There are five initial causes to benefit from the foundation; the first two relate to the tragic circumstances of Richard’s death:
  • Funding research into undiagnosed Heart conditions.
  • Supporting people through the bereavement process when there is a sudden loss.

Some of Richard’s life experiences inspire the remaining three causes:
  • Helping with environmental protection work for the Icelandic environmental agency Umhverfisstofnun.
  • Supporting education and artisan weaving in Myanmar.
  • Supporting Tibetan refugees.
The foundation will primarily make one off and annual grants to existing charitable causes once the trustees are satisfied the cause meets the appropriate criteria.
