The Need:

1. Salem's Youth Poverty: Did you know that in Salem, Oregon, around 18% of the population is living in poverty? That's more than 32,500 people struggling to meet their basic needs. Among them, there are many youths facing challenging circumstances.

2. Limited Spaces for Underserved Children: Unfortunately, there are only a few spaces dedicated to underserved children and populations in Salem. This means that there are not enough safe and low-cost places for kids and their families to gather, play, and learn together.

3. Current Space Constraints: The current Button Shoppe for these kids and families is quite small, only 316 square feet. It can comfortably hold about 6 to 8 people at a time. With such limited space, many children miss out on the opportunity to benefit from the activities and support provided.

4. Expanding Reach: Imagine the positive impact if we could expand this space to a 1500-square-foot area, with an additional outbuilding. With this larger space, we could accommodate approximately 50 to 80 people. That's ten times the number of children and families we can currently support.

5. Improved Facilities: Another great advantage of the proposed new space is the availability of a modernized ADA commercial bathroom. This will ensure that everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, can access and use the facilities comfortably.

6. A Safer Space for Everyone: The new community hub aims to be a safe space for all of my Button Buddies, especially for marginalized communities. It will provide a nurturing environment where kids and their families can express themselves freely without fear of judgment or stigma.

7. Embracing Diversity: We celebrate diversity and embrace the many different walks of life that surround us. By creating a welcoming and inclusive space, we hope to foster a sense of belonging and connection among everyone who utilizes the new space.

8. Benefits of Creativity: The hub's focus on creativity is vital for young minds. It allows the young and young at heart to explore their imagination, learn new skills, and express themselves in positive ways. However, access to such activities can often be limited for families facing economic hardships.

9. Low-Cost Access: One essential aspect of Radness Ensues is that it will provide low-cost access to its programs and activities. This way, families from all economic backgrounds can participate and benefit from the creativity and opportunities it offers.

By expanding the Button Shoppe into a community hub and creating a safe, inclusive, and creatively rich space, Salem can better support its youth and underserved populations. It will positively impact the lives of thousands of children and families, providing them with a place to grow, learn, and connect, ultimately helping to break the cycle of poverty and fostering a more inclusive and thriving community.

Becka Brisbin, the heart and soul of Radness Ensues, started as a small button shop but quickly blossomed into something much greater. With a boundless passion for buttons and community building, Becka envisioned a space where locals could express themselves, find support, and experience the magic of genuine human connections.

Radness Ensues is not just another business proposal—it's an extraordinary vision that combines diverse ventures under one roof. This unique, dinosaur-themed community hub will offer a wide range of products and services, including the Button Shoppe, Gift Shoppe, Beverage Shop, Commercial Kitchen, Groups, Room Rentals for birthday parties and more, Music/Dance events, Youth Internship programs, classes, a community garden, and whatever the universe determines by creating a space where Button Buddies can gather and create magical acts of radness!

The Button Shoppe, adorned with colorful buttons and dinosaur-themed merchandise, invites visitors to embark on a journey of self-expression and creativity. But it doesn't stop there—Radness Ensues aims to be a true one-stop destination for the community that thrives on creativity. It will also host Recovery Meetings, therapy groups, support groups, and after-school art programs. A place where people of all ages can learn, grow, and heal.

Becka's commitment to the well-being of the community is evident in the resources she provides. Her Button Shoppe currently serves as a sanctuary, offering information on mental health, addiction treatment, and youth programs. The Button Shoppe also hosts Recovery meetings, creating a safe space for LGBTQIA+ individuals seeking support, and a grief group after hours. With a bigger building, more groups could gather both inside and outside of business hours.

But Radness Ensues is more than just a business venture—it's a place of kindness and generosity. At her current Button Shoppe, Becka does her best to ensure everyone feels welcome and at home. For her, it's not about getting rich—it's about making a real difference in the lives of others, just as she experienced when she was a child facing homelessness.

Now, we need your help to turn this dream into reality. The funds raised will be used to get started on securing a building to build Radness Ensues, creating a vibrant space for the community, with a focal point on a strength-based supportive environment for people of all kinds to learn, grow, create, and embrace the best version of themselves. Your contribution will support local artists, provide opportunities for youth internships, and offer a hub for healing and growth.

By supporting Radness Ensues, you're not just funding a business; you're investing in the power of creativity and human connection. Your donation will help create a lasting impact on Salem and beyond, nurturing a community where everyone can feel seen, heard, and valued.

Join us in embracing the magic of creativity and community. Let's make Radness Ensues a reality—a place where the essence of self-expression and unity ensues. Together, we can build something truly special. Every little bit counts and your support will make all the difference.

Spread the word, share the love, and together, we will create something truly extraordinary. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey to make Radness Ensues a place where dreams come true!

So who is Becka and what is the Button Shoppe?

The Salem Reporter recently did a wonderful article that I feel truly captures the heart of the Button Shoppe, and what I aim to accomplish with it. You can read that here.

Throughout my life, I've always been driven by a deep desire to connect with others and pursue creative endeavors. From a young age, I took on the role of responsible caretaker among my family members, constantly finding inventive ways to keep everyone engaged and entertained.

As I grew into adulthood, I wholeheartedly embraced my passion for the arts, pouring my energy into various impactful projects. Not one to back down from challenges, I fearlessly pursued my dreams, even when faced with daunting obstacles. My unwavering belief that anything is achievable with determination has led to the creation of several lasting projects that have made a meaningful impact.

One of my significant accomplishments was founding and organizing Tacoma's Punk Rock Baseball and being the key founder of Punx in the Woods, which has grown to become the largest grassroots free festival in the Pacific Northwest. Additionally, I played a pivotal role in the success of The Industry of Sound, a performance troupe, and TIOS TACOMA, a local music magazine that defied expectations despite initial doubts.

Not confined to a single domain, I also explored the music business extensively, engaging in various roles such as performing, tour managing, and band managing both nationally and internationally. My commitment to fostering artistic communities led to the establishment of Hotel Baker, an underground speakeasy that became a vibrant hub for artists and musicians.

In 2012-2014, I made significant life changes, which included getting sober and navigating through a divorce. Driven by a hunger for growth, I embarked on a construction apprenticeship while pursuing an education. With relentless dedication, I earned my Journeyman status and a college degree in 2018. Throughout my construction career, I worked on major projects in the Seattle area as a lead grade-checker and remain an active union member.

Beyond my professional endeavors, I immersed myself in community involvement and served on various projects and committees. From helping to organize the Washington Women in Trades Career Fair in 2019 to actively contributing to the Carbonado Booster Club up until Covid, my commitment to giving back has been an integral part of who I am.

The culmination of years of dedication to my passion for creating led me to establish a successful brick-and-mortar Button Shoppe in my hometown of Salem. The Button Shoppe not only experienced remarkable growth, but it also became a platform for the RAD Youth Internship program, which focuses on teaching job skills to young individuals without prior work experience.

As a founding member of Punx in the Park , I actively contribute to Marion County's largest youth resource event. This initiative has now evolved into the nonprofit organization Punx with Purpose , which strives to uplift and support at-risk and underprivileged youth in Marion and Polk counties.

Additionally, I serve on the board of ROCC , Recovery Outreach Community Center, where I advocate for important causes such as recovery and mental health.

While I'm not one to boast, I believe it's crucial to provide a glimpse into my background and accomplishments as I seek support for my dreams. My journey has been defined by resilience, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others. With your support, I'm confident that I can continue to make a meaningful difference and achieve the goals I've set out to accomplish.

Why do we need this community hub?

Mental health is something that many of us struggle with at some point in our lives. I want to share my own experiences with you—I have been clinically diagnosed with PTSD, General Anxiety Disorder (GAD), and Mild-Moderate Depressive Disorder. Additionally, I am a survivor of adverse childhood experiences, trauma, and addiction. I have many neuro-divergent friends, as well as friends and family with special needs. Navigating the medical system and finding the right help can be incredibly challenging, especially when the majority of available options are tied to religious or government programs. While these programs serve a purpose for many, those of us who feel like outliers may find it even harder to connect with a community that truly understands our needs and encourages personal growth and healing.

In my journey, I discovered that music, art, and community played pivotal roles in saving my life. As I grew older and reached my 40s, I found some incredible therapists who based their approaches on neuroscience and EMDR, providing me with powerful tools to overcome the challenges I faced. It became clear to me that having a hub that is not influenced by any religious or political agenda is vital for fostering a thriving and healthy community. This is where the idea of Radness Ensues came into being.

With Radness Ensues, I aim to create a respite for people like you and me, individuals who struggle to fit into societal norms and yearn for a place where we can heal and grow without judgment or limitations. One of the recovery groups I am part of is among the few that cater specifically to the LGBTQIA+ community in Salem. I want Radness Ensues to bridge gaps and hold space for everyone to come together as people, united through the power of buttons, art, and music. By doing so, we can create safer spaces where love leads the way.

Finding a solution and making a positive impact on mental health is crucial for all of us. The statistics show that mental health issues affect a significant portion of the population, and LGBTQIA+ and other marginalized individuals can face even greater challenges due to discrimination and stigma. We need to address these issues, not just for ourselves but for the well-being of our communities. Untreated mental health conditions can have far-reaching consequences on our relationships, work, and overall happiness.

There have been previous efforts to tackle mental health problems, increase awareness, and reduce stigma. Various organizations and professionals have worked hard to provide support and resources to those in need. However, there is still much more to be done, especially in creating inclusive spaces like Radness Ensues, where people can find understanding and support without religious or political affiliations.

I believe that Radness Ensues can make a real difference in the lives of individuals who have faced trauma, mental health challenges, and difficult experiences. By creating space based on the tools I've gained throughout my life combined with the power of creative expressions like art and music, we have the potential to create a nurturing and empowering platform for self-guided personal growth and healing among like-minded individuals.

Goals and Objectives

A. Specific target amount to be raised

To bring the vision of "Radness Ensues - A Button Buddy Collective" to life, we recognize the need for substantial funds. Our ultimate goal is to raise $600,000, but we understand the daunting nature of this sum. Therefore, we'll begin our journey by setting a smaller, more achievable goal of raising $150,000 as our first milestone.

B. How the funds will be used and allocated

The $150,000 we aim to raise will play a crucial role in turning our dream into reality. Our primary focus is on securing the perfect location for the Button Shoppe. A 1500-square-foot building has captured our imagination, and we intend to make it our ideal home. However, should that opportunity slip away, the funds will still be sufficient to secure an equally suitable location, ensuring a strong foundation for the project.

Additionally, a portion of the funds will be allocated as working capital to kickstart the first phase of our venture. This capital will fuel the remodeling efforts and allow us to obtain the necessary permits to begin operations.

C. Clear and measurable objectives to be achieved with the funds

Secure the ideal location: Our first and foremost objective is to secure the 1500-square-foot building that embodies the spirit of the Button Shoppe. If this is not possible, we will promptly secure an equally suitable location to initiate operations.

Launch the Button Shoppe: With the funds in place, we will buy supplies to remodel the space, creating an inviting and captivating environment that will entice customers. The necessary permits will also be acquired during this phase, ensuring compliance with all regulations.

Begin generating revenue: The Button Shoppe will be operational in its new location, allowing us to start generating revenue outside of online orders. This initial income stream will serve as a foundation for future growth and expansion.

Expand Radness Ensues' offerings: While generating revenue from the Button Shoppe, we will simultaneously work on securing the required permits and conducting remodeling efforts for other aspects of Radness Ensues. This will enable us to broaden our range of products and experiences, attracting a diverse customer base.

Establish a strong online presence: Recognizing the significance of digital marketing, we will use a portion of the funds to create and maintain a website for Radness Ensues, complete with effective SEO strategies. Simultaneously, a well-funded social media campaign will be initiated to build awareness and generate interest in our offerings.

By focusing on these clear and measurable objectives, we are confident that the Button Shoppe will become a thriving hub of creativity and enjoyment, enriching the lives of our customers and fulfilling our dream of spreading radness in every possible way. Together, with your support, we can take this journey step by step, project by project, and bring our vision to life.

Impact and Benefits:

The funds raised for Radness Ensues - A Button Buddy Collective will have a transformative impact on the Salem community and beyond. By providing financial support, donors will be contributing to the realization of an extraordinary vision that combines diverse ventures under one roof, creating a dynamic community hub like no other.

Building a Vibrant Community Space: The funds will be used to secure a suitable location for the Button Shoppe, a 1500-square-foot building that embodies the spirit of Radness Ensues. This space will serve as a one-stop destination where creativity thrives, and genuine human connections are fostered. The vibrant environment, adorned with colorful buttons and dinosaur-themed merchandise, will invite visitors to embark on a journey of self-expression and creativity.

Supporting Local Artists and Entrepreneurs: By backing Radness Ensues, donors will be directly supporting local artists and entrepreneurs who contribute their unique creations to the Button Shoppe and other ventures within the collective. This support will bolster the creative economy and encourage the growth of small businesses.

Youth Internship Programs: A portion of the funds will be dedicated to the RAD Youth Internship program, which focuses on teaching job skills to young individuals without prior work experience. By empowering the youth with essential skills, Radness Ensues will play a significant role in shaping the future workforce and creating opportunities for young talent.

Safe and Inclusive Space: Radness Ensues will provide a safe and inclusive space for the LGBTQIA+ community, individuals facing mental health challenges, trauma survivors, those with special needs, and everyone who loves and supports these people, recognizes they are valued simply by existing and also seeks a world where we all can walk side by side in love and acceptance. By creating a strength-based, supportive environment, the community hub will foster personal growth, healing, and self-guided development.

Examples of the positive impact the campaign can have:

Creative Expression and Self-Discovery: Through the Button Shoppe and other artistic endeavors, Radness Ensues will encourage people of all ages to explore their creativity and express themselves freely. This creative outlet can lead to increased self-confidence, self-awareness, and a sense of purpose.

Connection and Belonging: The community hub will become a gathering place for like-minded individuals seeking genuine connections. By offering various support groups, therapy sessions, and after-school art programs, Radness Ensues will create a sense of belonging and a support network for its visitors.

Mental Health and Well-Being: The unique approach of combining art, music, and community engagement can have a positive impact on mental health. Providing resources and information on mental health, addiction treatment, and youth programs will further promote well-being within the community.

Empowerment of Marginalized Individuals: Radness Ensues aims to uplift and support at-risk and underprivileged youth in the Salem area. By providing resources and opportunities, the collective will empower marginalized individuals to overcome adversity and achieve their full potential.

Testimonials or success stories related to similar projects or causes:

While Radness Ensues is a unique and innovative vision, there are success stories from similar projects and causes that demonstrate the power of community-based initiatives in creating a positive impact:

"Art Heals " Program: A community art center in a neighboring city established an "Art Heals" program that provided art therapy workshops for survivors of trauma, abuse, and addiction. Testimonials from participants revealed how engaging in creative activities helped them process their emotions, build resilience, and find new hope for their futures.

"Youth Empowerment Project ": Another collective in a different community created a "Youth Empowerment Project," which focused on providing internships and job training for disadvantaged youth. Success stories from program alumni showcased how these opportunities improved their employability and boosted their confidence and sense of purpose.

These testimonials demonstrate the potential positive outcomes that can arise from community-driven projects like Radness Ensues. By contributing to this campaign, donors will play an instrumental role in creating a hub that promotes creativity, unity, and healing for individuals from all walks of life, ultimately making a lasting difference in the lives of the Salem community and beyond.
