Donation protected
Short Bio:

Sam was born in Miami, Florida, at South Miami Hospital, just feet away from the University of Miami. His journey began in the NICU, and he became a frequent patient at children's hospitals in Miami and Washington, DC. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of specialty doctors and his care team, Sam outgrew the conditions that required extensive medical attention.

In high school, Sam was a multi-talented student. As a sophomore, he was a member of the track team and football team until the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted these activities. He excelled academically, taking AP courses and becoming a certified pharmacy technician. Upon graduation, Sam received honors and a Certificate of Merit and was an active member of a Veterans Advocate Support Group. Inspired by his experiences and the exceptional care he received, Sam decided to become a doctor, aiming to pass the torch of compassion and expertise to future patients.

Introduction

The University of Miami, nestled in a vibrant hub of economic prosperity and lively culture, stands as a dream college for many students. With its year-round tropical weather and stunning scenery, the campus offers more than just visual appeal. The tropical climate enhances mood, energy levels, and stress relief, and can even boost memory, openness to new information, and improve inattentiveness—benefits particularly advantageous to students. Professors, too, relish teaching in such an environment, fostering a welcoming and nurturing space that sets students up for success.

University of Miami Experience

The University of Miami’s commitment to providing high-quality education and programs is evident as a top research institution. Recognizing the demands of the current job market, the university offers a wide array of specialties taught by highly respected professors. One student, Sam, knew this was the perfect school for him. Sam envisioned himself studying at Miami and prioritized attending, despite the challenges he faced. His determination paid off, and stepping foot in the 305 was everything he imagined and more. Sam seized every opportunity, making lifelong memories, receiving top-notch education, and participating in selective programs. Currently, he is studying at a prestigious private university in Tokyo, thanks to a partnership between Miami and Sophia University.

Academic Journey and Achievements

Sam’s time at the University of Miami has been transformative. He immersed himself in the vibrant campus life, forming lifelong friendships and engaging in various academic pursuits. The university’s diverse programs and esteemed faculty provided him with a solid foundation in his field of study. Through the Miami-Sophia University partnership, Sam is now studying at a top private university in Tokyo, broadening his horizons and gaining invaluable international experience. Despite his achievements, Sam’s journey is marred by financial struggles, which threaten to cut short his dreams.

Financial Challenges

Despite working full-time as a certified pharmacy technician during breaks and receiving third-party assistance, Sam struggles to meet Miami’s record-breaking cost of attendance. His semester bill stands at $19,393, with monthly payments ranging from $3,448.25 to $4,848.25, even with VA assistance. Additionally, Sam has acquired $7,400 in federal student loans, which must be repaid six months after graduation or immediately if he transfers to another university. The financial burden is overwhelming, and Sam needs support to continue his studies and achieve his goals.

Opportunities and Future Plans

With more time at the University of Miami, Sam plans to:

Reapply to Phi Delta Epsilon, a medical fraternity
Become a study abroad student ambassador
Apply for a residential assistant position, which includes financial assistance
Shadow and volunteer at the Bruce W. Carter Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center
These opportunities will enrich Sam’s academic experience and contribute significantly to his personal and professional growth.

Conclusion

Supporting Sam in his financial struggles is crucial for him to achieve his aspirations and continue his impactful journey at the University of Miami. Financial assistance will enable Sam to complete his studies, reapply to important programs, and give back to the university community as a dedicated student and future professional. Investing in Sam’s education is an investment in a promising future for both him and the University of Miami.
