Empower Swenson Students: SuperNationals 2025
Donation protected
The SuperNationals is a chess tournament that combines the United States Chess Federation's (USCF) three national scholastic chess championships into one event:
National Elementary (K-6)
National Middle School (K-8)
National High School (K-12)
The SuperNationals is held every four years and is the largest chess tournament in the world to take place in one location. The first SuperNationals was held in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1997, and the next one will be held in Orlando, Florida, from May 9 to 11, 2025.
The SuperNationals was created to address concerns that young chess prodigies could win multiple championships in the same year. The event also includes other attractions, such as book signings and other activities.
At Swenson High School in Philadelphia, the air buzzes with excitement every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Students gather in the Chem lab room 130, chessboards spread across tables, as the school’s chess team huddles for practice. Among them is a diverse group of passionate teens, each with dreams of mastering the game and representing their school at the prestigious SuperNationals in Orlando, Florida, from May 9 to 11, 2025.
This year, the stakes are higher than ever. The team is determined to raise $8,500 to cover travel, accommodation, and registration fees for the tournament. For many of these students, this isn’t just about chess; it’s about opportunity, teamwork, and the chance to showcase their skills on a national stage.
Meet Javen, a senior who joined the team two years ago. Coming from a neighborhood where opportunities are scarce, chess became his refuge. He has spent countless hours honing his strategies, dreaming of the moment he can sit across from opponents who share his passion. “SuperNationals would mean everything to me,” Javen says, his voice steady but filled with hope. “It’s a chance to prove that hard work pays off.”
Then there’s Sarvinoz, a freshman who is new to Swenson. She juggles her time between academics and her role in the chess club, inspiring her teammates with her dedication. “We’re more than just a team; we’re a family,” she says. “Going to SuperNationals would not only help us grow as players but also strengthen our bonds. We want to show that students from Swenson can compete with the best.”
The team has already organized food sales, bingo nights, and online campaigns, but they still have a long way to go. Each dollar raised not only helps with expenses but also sends a powerful message: that with community support, anything is possible. “Every donation, no matter how small, gets us closer to our goal,” says Coach Rivera, who has been a mentor to these young players. “It shows them that their dreams matter.”
As the tournament approaches, the team’s excitement grows. They envision the bright lights of Orlando, the thrill of competition, and the camaraderie that comes with being part of something bigger. “We want to bring back stories of triumph and resilience,” Javen says, his eyes sparkling with ambition.
Supporting the Swenson chess team means investing in a group of dedicated students who have already shown incredible determination. They are not just playing for themselves but for their school, their families, and their community. With your help, they can make their dream of competing at SuperNationals a reality.
Join us in this journey. Help the Swenson chess team reach their goal and pave the way for future generations of young players. Together, we can make a difference—one move at a time.
