Hi, my name is Poetré. I am a comedian, poet, and apparently now I make movies. This film, "But She Dark Skin Tho" is based on a poem I wrote years ago. Every time I perform this piece, the audience seems to connect with this fictional woman that I've created, but here's the thing, she's real. And believe it or not, she's not just dark skin. She's the potential of every woman everywhere. All complexions, races, locations, economic statuses, all of them. What it describes is a woman that has healed from her life circumstances. It describes a woman that has had a rough go at life, but she still fights to be the woman she deserves to be. It's your mother, your daughter, your girlfriend, your bestie, and so forth.
I've decided to breathe life into this film so that every woman has the chance to see herself celebrated and to see herself healed from her pains and traumas. It's important for me to tell this story because I am a product of a single mother, who has always loved me and provided for me no matter what else was going on in her life. As a male, I love women. All women, and as a son that has witnessed his mother triumph through adversity, I want to share the story of a woman winning in life from the perspective of her supportive counterpart.
Everyone needs this film. It talks about strength, embracing adversity, and embracing each other's differences. And it addresses the colorism that lingers in Black culture. We are all kings and queens regardless of our skin shade.
This is also, of course, a love story. A story of a couple that fights through their imperfections and their trauma lenses to find a healing love.
We achieve all of this by highlighting an art form that is very popular and sometimes misunderstood, poetry. We give glimpses of the world of poetry, and what it is like to be a poet and a fan of poetry.
I know you are thinking LOVE JONES, but it is and it isn't, but we gotta get it done so everyone to make their own decisions.
Help me share this story, that you may feel like has already been told, but I promise you, it wasn't told like this.
