Empower Women with Songbird Supper Club

Donation protected
Songbird Supper Club is a free monthly community event that supports, uplifts, and celebrates women in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Over the past two years, it has become a transformational space, where patriarchal conditioning that has held women back is being subverted. At each event, four women are featured, performing and sharing their creative work before speaking openly in an interview with host Cashavelly. Women are encouraged to show up as they are, be it messy, imperfect, and raw and truthful. This in itself is powerful, freeing women in front of an audience to be celebrated for who they are and where they are on their paths, whether seasoned professionals or new to performing. The interviews are powerful and unique as women share within community what is normally kept behind closed doors - the vulnerability, issues, stories, and concerns that have shaped women's lives, yet also have limited and hurt women when kept silent. The interviews offer an in-the-moment corrective experience to women's pain and trauma, empowering and emboldening women with strategies to overcome and end outdated modes of systemic sexism and misogyny. The event is free so that it remains accessible to everyone in the community to attend the event every month, allowing roots to deepen and connections to be made.

Songbird Supper Club was supported by the U.S. federal ARPA grant through the Forsyth County Winston-Salem Arts Council for its first two years. We are now on our own and need to raise our own funding. Please contribute so this safe, generative space for women can continue as a staple of our Winston-Salem community and further the positive change it is spearheading.
