Empowering Sri Lanka

Donation protected
At 8:45am on April 21st, 2019, Easter Sunday, the island of Sri Lanka fell victim to 8 gruesome, dastardly attacks led by barbaric extremists who targeted prominent churches and lavish hotels. Over 300 lives were lost, and many more were left injured. Words cannot begin to fathom the extent of devastation and heartbreak the country is currently facing.

During this time of turmoil, I have asked many families and friends to send their thoughts and prayers to my beautiful motherland, but in reality, prayers are not enough. The people of Sri Lanka deserve more, and I hope to give it to them. I have created this campaign as an effort to support and empower the traumatized people of my beloved country. The contributed funds will be used to rehabilitate the people who are suffering mentally and physically. I am still in search of a well-established organization that will ensure the money we raise will go to the civilians of Sri Lanka who need it the most. As soon as a proper organization is confirmed, I will update it into my campaign and website that is still being developed.

As my heart goes out to the families who have lost loved ones, and as I pray for the recovery of the injured, I ask you to join me in standing up to the terrorists who attempt to break the bond of nations. I ask you to divert your sadness and anger into hopes of empowering those in need. I ask you to help me liberate the country of Sri Lanka from its agony. But above all else, I ask you to indulge in the power of empathy and spread love to everyone and everything.

My name is Heylee Hewawasam, and I am a Sri Lankan-American currently in high school. I live in Chicago, Illinois with my parents and 2  brothers. My mother and father immigrated to the US from Sri Lanka in 2000, but still keep very close ties with their motherland. I was 4 years old when I first visited the island, and I have been in love with it ever since. My family and I regularly visit Sri Lanka about every year during the summer to visit my extended family, and each time I find myself clinging onto every moment there.

Having been immersed into the culture from a very young age, I have an inclination to use my opportunities and resources to help the developing country of Sri Lanka. The lovely people that reside on the island serve as my motivation to spread support and kindness to those around me, and I hope it empowers you as well.
