Empower Widows in Kenya Through E-Mobility: Transform Lives

Imagine the impact of empowering 400 widows in rural Kenya by providing them with sustainable transport and cold storage solutions. These women, part of the Awuoth Widows and Orphans CBO, have been deeply affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Through farming African Leafy Vegetables and other crops, they are working hard to provide for their families. However, the lack of affordable and reliable transportation limits their ability to bring their produce from farm to market, drastically reducing their income.
The Challenge:
These widows are currently spending more on transportation than they earn. For every 300 kg of vegetables they transport, they pay $13.86 while only earning $34.62. Additionally, they face costly and unreliable cold storage solutions, further reducing their profit margins. As a result, these women struggle to break the cycle of poverty despite their hard work and dedication.
The Solution:
E-Safiri, a female-founded start-up in Kenya, is partnering with Awuoth Widows and Orphans CBO to change this. We specialize in building off-grid charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, and our goal is to empower rural women through e-mobility solutions. In 2023, we piloted our SUN-RUN project, providing the women with electric three-wheelers and cold storage solutions. The results were transformative:
- Transport costs were cut in half (from $13.86 to $6.15 for 300 kg of produce).
- Access to cold storage increased their revenue by 50%.
- The women were able to access new markets, further boosting their income.
How You Can Help:
While we've been able to set up a charging hub and cold storage, the women still lack the funds to purchase their own electric three-wheelers. This is where you come in. We are raising funds to provide two electric three-wheeler vehicles for the Awuoth widows, enabling them to transport their produce efficiently and independently.
The funds will be used to:
1. Procure 2 electric-three wheeler cargo loaders - € 17,596 (€ 8,798 each)
2. Transport to Awuoth CBO premises - € 1,094
3. Procure 2 additional batteries - € 1,310
