A year ago we got a call that changed our lives forever. Our son Kwayde was hit by a wrong way driver on his Harley resulting in many injuries and his leg amputated below his knee. Not only our lives were changed, but Kwayde’s life was now on a different path. On that same day of the accident he was accepted into a reserve Fire Academy, something he had worked very hard to achieve. It would be very easy for Kwayde to be angry at the driver but he isn’t because he doesn’t believe the driver set out that day to hurt him. He’s more upset at the limitations the insurance companies have put on his ability to rehabilitate. The things we take for granted like running, swimming, biking, Kwayde now needs a separate leg for each of those activities. Insurance sets a limit of only one walking leg every 2 years for an average below the knee amputee. Because of Kwayde’s high level of athleticism from SDSU and NFL football and his drive to succeed, Kwayde will not settle for average. Even with the COVID restrictions he will not stop pursuing his career goal of being in the fire service as a Below the knee amputee Fire Fighter. The prosthetic leg the insurance will provide is not adequate for Kwayde to accomplish his goals, and he realizes that. Because of his drive to succeed, Kwayde has set a goal to raise funds and apply for grants on his own for a prosthetic leg that meets his level of athleticism and his continued pursuit of his fire fighter career. As parents we can not let our son do this on his own so we are starting this fund raiser and humbly asked for your assistance.
During this life changing accident Kwayde's attitude has never been "why me" or "my life is ruined" its always been what do I need to do to get on with my life and meet my goals. Unfortunately the reality is for Kwayde to succeed in his goals it takes money. The money collected will be used for prosthetics, high insurance premiums he is currently paying on his own since he has been out of work, and his continued rehab to get back on his path.
