Hello. My name is Shane Webb. I'm a local musician here in Jacksonville Florida. My whole life music has been the center of my world and I've spent the better part of my life pursuing my musical dreams. I've been extremely blessed with the good fortune of being able to fulfill several of them over the years.
Since I was 4 years old I've been battling a ear infection in my right ear. It's never prevented me from playing but I have lost 85% of my hearing in that ear and have delt with drainage and sometimes pain. For the longest time those were the only symptoms. However, in April of last year the symptoms started getting much worse. I started having episodes of splotchy vision severe dizziness to the point that I would miss time from work. I had several of these episodes before the end of the year. then in January of this year I had a severe flu and noticed that I was tasting something funny in the back of my throat when I would swallow. I told my doctor who sent me to a specialist.
The first specialist I went to said that my case is severe and that medication will not work. In my case, surgery is the only option. He recommended another specialist that could handle such a complicated surgery. He strongly advised due to the fact that I've had the infection for so long, 38 years, that I not wait more than two weeks. After going to the second specialist I've been diagnosed with a "Cholesteatoma" and the surgery I need is called a "Mastoidectomy".
Basically, the ear infection I had at 4 years old, never went away. Over time it has wrapped itself around the Mastoidbone in my middle ear causing all of my symptoms. The drainage, which has been a daily issue from the start, contains an enzyme that eats away at the Mastoidbone and pretty much anything else near it which is why my case is so urgent. There is a bone in the upper ear canal that protects the brain. This bone, in a normal healthy person, is only 2mm thick. Being that the enzyme has been eating away at it for almost 40 years, there's not much left. If I don't have the Mastoidectomy before the end of the year, I'm being told that BRAIN DAMAGE is when, not if.
The surgery is done by opening the skull behind the ear and cutting out the infection. They will also cut out a section of the mastoid bone and replace it with a titanium inplant. I'll have several post op visits as there is a possibility that the infection could grow back. I'll have to take a break from music and other activities for recovery time which could be weeks to months. Although I wont have all of my hearing back , it's my docoters goal to return as much as possible and, hopefully, get rid of the infection for good. I'll take that over brain damage any day.
All of this leads to something that, for me and many others, is hard to do...ask for help. Because of the urgency and limited time of the surgery, I have come for help with the deductible amount, which is due in full the day of the pre-op in November. The surgery is scheduled for December. I'll be out for a while but should be up and rocking better than before in no time. I love all of my Jacksonville family and with your help and prayers I'll get this thing taken care of. You can donate completely anonymous and there are no fees, it's completely free. Any help at all would be so unbelievably appreciated. God bless and love you all and THANK YOU !!!!!!
