Endowed Oak Tree for late Dr. Jonathan Dowling
Donation protected
Dear Friends,
My name is Aliza, and I am fundraising to endow an Oak at Louisiana State University, in honor of the late Prof. Jonathan P. Dowling. Prof. Jonathan Dowling was the Hearne Chair of Theoretical Physics, professor at LSU, and led the Quantum Science and Technologies research group.
On paper, Jon Dowling was the boss of many undergraduate and graduate students, but in reality, he was a physics father, a mentor, a friend, and family all wrapped up in one. Many students come to graduate school prepared for the rough environment and the stress that comes with getting a PhD---bracing themselves. But Jon never wanted grad school to be a burden for his students. He always wanted us to have fun while working hard on our studies. He did not just care about the work but he cared about us as well. He may have been loud, but became the quietest person when listening to others.
If you ever hit rock bottom and lost all confidence in yourself, Jon was there to lift you up. He was an inspiration for anyone who hoped for a career in science and is single handedly the reason why many people considered trying to get a higher degree. He kept reminding us that we can do better whenever we had doubts about ourselves. He radiated so much confidence and created an environment in which you could thrive and make your dreams come true.
His quick wit and mastery of the pun were legendary, as was his yelling. His laughter was infectious and his smile was beautiful. He was a wonderful human being, co-founder of Quantum Technology, and the funniest man in the universe! Selfless and always helpful.
Jonathan Dowling left a legacy here at LSU and taught everyone that anyone, regardless of age, ethnicity, or gender, can do science. We wish to preserve his legacy through this plaque and inspire others to be the same kind of leaders as Jon was.
