Enrique Medina's Kidney Transplant
Donation protected
It is with sadness that I am informing my family and friends about the current health condition of my loving husband of 42 years.
Enrique was diagnosed with diabetes in 1986, which has progressed throughout the years, deteriorating his health. In August 2020, during the pandemic, he went into end-stage renal failure and was hospitalized for 3 weeks. This was the most difficult of times, due to the side-effects of dialysis, which left him fatigued, greatly affecting his quality of life. These have been the most challenging years for Enrique, as his health has begun to decline rapidly. The UC Davis doctors have stated that the time has come for Enrique to have a kidney transplant. The transplant is necessary to extend his life. Enrique suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and the aftermath of his horrendous car accident in the 80’s. He has always faced his health issues with a strong will for a better quality of life. Enrique remains hopeful and optimistic about what lies ahead.
Unfortunately, this is Enrique’s only option - a kidney transplant. During this time, he wishes the focus could be on other things besides himself, but he is grateful for the medical treatment he has received at UC Davis. Before his health began to go downhill, he enjoyed having an active lifestyle. We are hopeful that he will receive a kidney, regain his strength, and live life to the fullest. Currently, more than anything, Enrique wants to spend many more years with his loved ones.
Regrettably, Enrique’s hope for a new kidney comes at a price. Medicare and supplemental insurance will not cover the full cost of all medications. Post-transplant medications are expensive and not entirely covered by insurance or special programs. The medications are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself. The requirement for the kidney transplant is to secure the out-of-pocket cost prior to the surgery. UC Davis will only proceed with Enrique’s kidney transplant when there is sufficient funding to cover these expenses. He has to follow the recovery and post-surgery protocol thoroughly.
Enrique and I live a great distance from UC in Davis, CA. When he receives the transplant, I will need to stay near the hospital, which insurance does not cover. UC Davis does not have any family residential programs available for me to be close to him. I have been working in a temporary position and do not accumulate paid leave, so missing work will be a financial hardship. Life has thrown us a burden that we cannot endure. Any help would be appreciated.
God has blessed us with caring friends and family. Please keep us in your prayers.
Sending you all much love,
