Our Dear Friend Enrique Romero

Enrique Romero was born 2 December 1951.

As a young adult he decided to open his own bicycle shop where he quickly found out he had not only an interest in bicycles, but a natural talent for working with them. He continued in that career -assembling, maintaining, repairing, and consulting with professional bikers’ high-end bicycles for The Bicycle Chain specialty shops in Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Raleigh, NC.

Enrique was a well-known, vital member of many Chatham County “communities.” He was always in search of someone needing help. Some of his “communities” included CORA food pantry in Pittsboro; Shakori Hills Community Arts Center in Silk Hope; Community Dinners in both Siler City and Pittsboro; El Vinculo Hispano/Hispanic Liaison in Siler City; and Chatham Literacy in Siler City. Who knows how many other lives he touched as he traveled Chatham County on his bicycle looking for anyone needing help with anything.

He left a legacy of gentle kindness and concern for others, as is confirmed by over 100 Facebook comments. He was soft-spoken, intelligent, sensitive and had a wicked sense of humor. There is no doubt Enrique’s death left a hole, not only in many hearts, but also in Chatham County.

CORA held an “Enrique Romero Day” last year honoring him as an exceptional volunteer. Subsequently they are now instituting an annual “Volunteer of the Year” award. Chatham Literacy also recognized him last year as an outstanding student and volunteer. He was recognized by El Vinculo Hispano with a certificate acknowledging his volunteer activities with them. Additionally, Enrique’s photo appeared on the cover of Chatham County United Way’s Annual Report last year.
