A Mother’s Plea for Her Son’s Health and Future

My name is Elizabeth, and I am reaching out for help on behalf of my four-year-old son, Gideon. Gideon was born with Classic PKU, a rare metabolic disorder that prevents his body from breaking down protein properly. To survive and thrive, he must adhere to a lifelong medical diet that strictly limits him to just 7 grams of protein per day—about two cups of broccoli. Without proper treatment, PKU can lead to seizures, severe developmental delays, and cognitive impairments.

The only treatment for PKU is medical food—specialized low-protein foods and formulas that provide the nutrition he needs while avoiding the amino acids his body cannot process. But in Florida, these medical foods are not covered by insurance, and starting in April, Gideon will lose his Medicaid coverage. As a teacher and the wife of a blue-collar worker, we are a hardworking family, but the financial burden of Gideon’s care is overwhelming.

Why We Need Your Help

We are raising funds to ensure Gideon has continuous access to his life-sustaining medical foods and to relocate closer to his metabolic clinic, where he receives care from specialists who monitor his condition. Right now, we live too far from the care team that he depends on, and frequent long trips to appointments make managing his health even more challenging.

We also want to make a difference for others facing this struggle. 5% of all donations will be donated to the National PKU Alliance, which funds groundbreaking PKU research in search of a cure and provides support programs for individuals and families living with PKU.
