Donation protected
Hello everyone,

We would like to thank you for coming to our fundraising page and for your support in this endeavor.

Challenge Summary:

Marcos vs Don. Run vs walk. 26.2 vs 18.2 who will win? Don and I are challenging ourselves to a run/walk race. I will run a marathon and Don will walk 18.2 miles. The winner of the challenge will get to use 55% of the money raised to donate to their respective charity. The other will take the remaining 45% to donate to their charity. We announced this on Memorial Day and we will train until Independence Day, our race event.  Follow me on Instagram: @marcos_g23 to see the progress of my training and for any updates.

Marcos Charity:

I will be raising money for the Center for Farmworker Families whose purpose is to promote awareness about the difficult life circumstances that farmworker families face on a daily basis. Being that my mother and father met working in the fields of Ukiah, California, I have always felt that this is an important part of my history. I grew up listening to my mother tell stories about life in the fields and that has had an impact on me. It was through my parents' hard work in the fields that I am blessed with the opportunities I have had in life. These farmworkers just want these same opportunities for their children, opportunities they did not have. Currently, only about 10% of children of farmworkers graduate from high school, and being a teacher, this very disheartening.

These workers are exempt from Nationa Labor Relations Laws that protect workers in the United States. Many are not entitled to overtime pay or mandatory restrooms breaks or minimum wage laws. However, they are subject to poor working conditions and exposure to pesticides. Being a farmworker is not a career goal or a life-long dream; it is a physically demanding occupation that is shunned by many. To them, it is a reality, it is survival, it is food on the table of a make-shift home in some cases. My friend, Armando Fregoso, said it best, "If we follow the trail backward from all the healthy fruits and vegetables we eat, it starts with them." So I am asking that you make a small contribution to an organization that promotes the well-being of a segment of society that is often overlooked and always under-appreciated. Thank you for your support.

Don’s Charity:

I will be raising money for INTERVAL HOUSE Crisis Shelters & Centers for Victims of Domestic Violence.  They have served as a “model” domestic violence program for the nation and have been recognized with many awards.  They serve individuals and families in Los Angeles County and Orange County.  I became interested in this organization through my mother.  My mother has donated her time and financial support to various charities over the years which has inspired me, but with this local organization, it resonated even more so.  It is personal because I know people who have been attacked and/or abused and it hurts me to my core.

When I think of 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime (CDC, 2017), it rattles me.  Almost half (47.5%) of American Indian/Alaska Native women, 45.1% of non-Hispanic Black women, 37.3% of non-Hispanic White women, 34.4% of Hispanic women, and 18.3% of Asian-Pacific Islander women experience contact sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.  2 in 5 lesbian women, 3 in 5 bisexual women, and 1 in 3 heterosexual women will experience rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. (CDC, 2010).  1 in 4 gay men, 1 in 3 bisexual men, and 3 in 10 heterosexual men will experience rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. (CDC, 2010).  Those numbers are disturbing and with this current COVID-19 pandemic causing stay at home orders to be put in place, those numbers are rising even more.  When my wife and I got married, we donated on behalf of our guests to three charities and INTERVAL HOUSE was one of them.  We have donated money and clothes over the years, but their mission seems even more critical NOW!  Please support me and raising funds to help some of these people in need.

Domestic violence is a recurring, destructive phenomenon in our society that affects individuals of all ages and from all socioeconomic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.  The mission of Interval House is to ensure safety for people who are battered, abused, or at risk; to create public awareness about the epidemic of violence, and to mobilize the community to prevent violence and end this recurring phenomenon.  Interval House was founded in 1979 as a lifeline to underserved victims in crisis.  Today, Interval House has strengthened its mission and purpose by offering specialized programs and services in over 70 different languages for both youth and adult victims.  For more information check out www.intervalhouse.org  Thank you.

Don and I would like to thank you all for supporting us in this challenge. It is greatly appreciated!
