Many of you know that my sister, Beth, has been living with excruciating nerve pain for the last four years.
She has been passed from one specialist to the next--from dentists to ENTs to chiropractors to acupuncturists to neurosurgeons--, submitted to x-rays, MRIs, CT and PET scans, been mis+/-diagnosed with everything from Bell's palsy to compressed discs, with no long-term relief from any type of pain medication she was prescribed nor treatment intervention on offer.
Finally, a neurosurgeon who suspected trigeminal neuralgia ordered a FIESTA MRI to prepare Beth for microvascular decompression surgery. When this specialized MRI revealed a tumor, the neurosurgeon referred her to an otolaryngologist specializing in head and neck tumors, and an entirely different surgery was planned.
Surgery on December 10th to remove the tumor revealed that it was positioned between Beth's jawbone and the offending nerve, and the surgeon expressed confidence that this was the source of Beth's pain. The pathologist in the OR stated that nothing indicated malignancy, and we began to believe that it all might actually be behind her.
When the pathology report came back, however, we learned we were just getting started. On December 20th, Beth was diagnosed with mucoepidermoid carcinoma with perineural invasion (the cancer had spread from the tumor to the adjacent nerve).
Already with a mountain of medical bills not covered by insurance from all those specialists, scans, medications, and surgery, Beth begins 2020 knowing that she will also be burdened with the cost of radiation therapy and the potential for more surgery.
Helping to relieve the anxiety caused by this enormous financial burden will allow Beth to concentrate her energy where it needs to be: on kicking cancer's ass!
Four years of horrific pain have robbed Beth of the life she loved--of being a fun-loving, party-planning, home-decorating, costume-killing, piecakein bakin', goddess of craft gifting! Please, if you are able, help us to give her life back to her, and Beth back to the people who love her dearly.
