September 10, 2015: Kristy attended a meeting on Syrian refugee sponsorship. Kristy and Dave decided they wanted to co-sponsor a refugee individual or family.
September 11, 2015: On Facebook, Kristy posted their desire to co-sponsor a Syrian refugee individual or family and asked if anyone else wanted to help.
September 14, 2015: In four short days, 6 co-sponsors had come forward and $6500 pledged.
September 20, 2015: We had our first meeting at Casa Maria House. Of the eight people present, seven pledged to go forward as co-sponsors following our info session with Sister Ruth, and Aspa B., an extraordinary volunteer. With spouses, we were now a group of 10.
September 25, 2015: Aspa called and wanted to know if we wanted to try for one of the 50 Syrian blended VOR (Visa Office-Referred) families. These are refugee families identified as being at high risk by the United Nations High Commission on Refugees. The Canadian government provides 6 months of sponsorship. We said yes. New members joined: we were now a group of 13 co-sponsors.
September 28, 2015: Thanks to Aspa, we were granted a Syrian refugee family: Mother, 12-year-old-daughter, 10-year-old-son, 8-year-old daughter, Planning began in earnest for the arrival of the family, which could be as soon as in one month. Two more sponsors joined: now there are 15 co-sponsors.
October 3, 2015: Many members of our group went online and public and started asking for friends and families to donate to our cause.
October 4, 2015: A family came forward and offered to provide new beds, bedding, pillows and sheets.
We are seeking to fundraise the balance of the money required to meet our refugee sponsorship committment to our Syrian family. The family will hopefully be here in as little as a month and we need to act fast to find them a place to live, and ensure their living expenses and needs are met for a period of one year. We require $13500 as a minimum and would like to cover the $4000 approximate cost of their flights to Canada. Any surplus we generate would go to the sponsorship of a second family by our group. We have generated approximately $10000 as co-sponsors.
Further details are posted on our Facebook site, Salaam Peterborough: Families Helping Families. And if you are reading this, chances are you know one of the co-sponsors and have read our personal posts asking for help and support.
Thank you for helping a Syrian refugee family. We look forward to giving a mother and her three children the chance at a peaceful, safe life.
