Epileptic and Functional Seizures Nightmare

Donation protected
  • Hi my name is Ronald Lafond, My wife Bonnie has been going through hell since March of 2022. She has been dealing with Epileptic and Functional seizures and it has taken over her life. Since then she has between 4 and 10 seizures daily and has had her medication switched many times and nothing seems to be helping. She is seeing a Neurologist out of Toronto as well as weekly sessions with a Social Worker. Because the Functional Seizures are mental health related and have a lot to do with things that have happened in your past this process is taking a lot of time and things have not been getting better. Since March of 2022, Bonnie has not worked and has had her licence taken away. She had gone 7 years seizure free at one point and was finally able to get her licence. She has barely left the house in over a year because everytime we do go somewhere for a doctor's appointment she has a seizure. Many family and friends have seen the effect this has had on Bonnie and how it has taken it's toll on our family. My daughter recently had a baby and he is now 5 months old and my wife can't be left alone with the baby for fear of having a seizure causing danger to the baby. This breaks her heart. We have tried many different medication changes, seen a Chiropractor, Osteopath for the body pains that the seizures are causing. She is currently seeing a Social Worker and a Psychotherapist and they are recomending Ketamine Assisted Therapy of which she has been refered to by her Neurologist. This Therapy is very expensive and not covered by my work plan. I have included some reading material explaining the procedure and the cost. We would also have to travel to Toronto on possibly more than a few occasions. I was dreading having to do this but over the last year I have used up almost all of my savings trying to keep up with the bills and since my wife will most likely not be returning to work anytime soon, the only alternative was setting up a GoFundMe page for my wife Bonnie so that she could try this Ketamine Assisted Therapy. I want to see my beautiful wife back to being happy again. She has not been happy in a long time and if this therapy gives her that opportunity I figure I have no choice. I had to copy and paste the information about the Therapy.

Welcome to Your Healing Journey With Numinus
Thank you for choosing our psychedelic therapy treatments at Numinus. Our medical team
has determined that one of our treatments will be safe for you to begin.
The information in this document is intended to help prepare you for your healing journey
with Numinus, as well as to continue guiding you through it. There is a lot of information here—do
not feel you have to read it all at once.
Our clinic staff is here to support you throughout your healing journey; please feel free to
reach out to them anytime with any questions or concerns.
If you have not done so already, please familiarize yourself with the other documents that
our team has provided you with about the program you will be entering.
Psychedelic Therapies at Numinus
At Numinus, our psychedelic therapies are backed by evidence-based research. The
psychedelic medicines help reveal new landscapes of the mind and expose new pathways to
healing. To make the most of this state, you will either work with one of our therapists or use our
educational materials to prepare for the experience, as well as to integrate it into your daily life
afterwards.
Psychedelics can assist in the development of psychological flexibility by contributing to a
willingness to be more open, compassionate, and non-judgmental towards your experiences and
emotions. It may become easier to face painful memories or trauma so that they may be addressed
and resolved.
These medicines also have certain antidepressant effects and may promote
‘neuroplasticity,’ which is the brain’s ability to adapt and change. This may help with the
integration of your experiences as you work on new actions in your life and accept new ways of
seeing yourself in the world.
It is important to remember that therapy is not a necessary part of all of our programs.
Some allow you to be treated with psychedelic medicines and to use our educational materials to
further your experience yourself from home; other treatments are less flexible and require working
with one of our therapists. Our clinical team will work with you to establish what treatment is best
for your current healing goals and needs.
Depending on the mental health condition being treated, our therapeutic treatments and
educational materials incorporate elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT),
Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), and Somatic techniques. Our approach also uses
mindfulness techniques to help cultivate mental flexibility, acceptance, and commitment to new
actions that will enrich your life.
Some important themes and skills that will pop up again and again in the programs
include:
• Bringing full awareness to the present moment
• Acceptance of your present-moment experience
• Clarifying your values
• Identifying actions that support these values
• Noticing shifts in how you see yourself and key relationships
Keep in mind, it is also not necessary for you to remember all of the information here about
how our treatments may be able to help you on your healing journey; our clinical team is here with
you for every step of the way and is happy to answer any questions as you progress through your
time with us and to explain these concepts to you.
The Support Person
We welcome you to include a support person into your healing journey at Numinus. A
support person is anyone in your life with whom you feel emotionally safe, connected, and
understood. Essentially, this is a person who cares deeply for you and is committed to helping you
on your healing journey. They can support you during the treatment, and serve as a bridge to help
integrate and clarify shifts and breakthroughs into your everyday life after treatment.
If there is no one in your life right now that is accessible or available to support you
through treatment, that is okay. Your experience will not be lessened.
It is important to note that a support person cannot attend all session types; our clinical
staff will work with you to clarify when a support person may be present. This is done to ensure
that you get the most out of your healing experience at Numinus. It is also important to note that
the support person does not need to attend all sessions if they are not able or if this is not what
you would like.

Therapeutic Touch
At Numinus, we acknowledge that touch can be a deeply important element of your healing
journey. This simple action, such as someone holding your hand, may provide you with a sense of
support during your psychedelic experience, especially as you confront challenging emotions and
memories.
If you are going through sessions with a therapist, the therapist will discuss this topic
extensively with you, as well as go over your comfort with touch while working on firm boundaries
of consent.
Dosing of Psychedelic Medicines
At Numinus, your safety and wellbeing are our top priority. Though you may think that
taking a larger dose of the psychedelic medicine will lead to more healing, this is not always the
case. A larger dose may be overwhelming, even if you have previously been treated with
psychedelic medicines. Our medical team works carefully to ensure they have gotten a feeling for
your tolerance for—and response to—the psychedelic medicine to ensure your safety and that you
can have the best possible experience that may lead to the deepest healing.
Generally, you will be given a lower dose for your first psychedelic experience, with higher
doses for subsequent experiences if needed. Mild- to moderate-dose psychedelic states can still
lead to deep healing experiences; it is important that you enter your program with this in mind, and
remember that the clinical staff is working to ensure your safety and wellbeing throughout.
The Psychedelic Experience
Though your exact psychedelic experience will depend on the medicine you are being
treated with and the dose you receive, there are some general things you can expect from the
experience. After receiving the medicine, you will start to feel changes in the sensations in your
body as well as your perceptions—both physical and mental. These changes will grow and develop,
pulling you deeper into the psychedelic experience.
You may feel like you have left your body or experience an altered sense of time and space.
You may have a deep experience in which you may feel your sense of self dissolving, or as if you
are dying or being reborn. In this state, you may feel deeply connected to nature, the universe, or to
a divine presence. This change in perception of yourself and your relation to other people and
things around you provides an excellent opportunity to examine yourself from an outside
perspective, allowing you to gain new insights into yourself and your mental health. The experience
may result in the feeling of or release of powerful emotions. You may experience strong memories
from your past.
It is also possible to have uncomfortable experiences. You may feel fear or confusion, or
confront uncomfortable memories or realizations. What is important to remember is that even
though these sorts of experiences may seem undesirable, they are actually important elements of
healing. It is important to always meet the experience with curiosity while avoiding the urge to try
and change, control, or resist it. An important part of healing involves approaching the
uncomfortable and creating a new relationship with it, which is the goal of your work during this
form of psychedelic experience.
As psychedelic experiences last for a period of time, you may have a range of different
sorts of experiences in a single session. It can be tempting to try and direct the experience, but
what is important is to go with the flow of the medicine, embracing the experience and seeing
where it takes you and what it can provide you on your healing journey.
As the psychedelic experience may be intense, there is great value in having a guide with
you. For this reason, we offer sessions with trained therapists who can accompany you through the
psychedelic experience and guide you on a path of healing, keeping you focused and pointed in
the right direction. Though we do offer sessions with psychedelic medicines but without
therapists, it is important to remember that the role of a trained therapist in this work cannot be
overstated, and it cannot be replaced.
Before and After the Psychedelic Experience
No matter which medicine you are being treated with, there are important rules in place
about preparing for the experience to ensure your safety. Please make sure you have thoroughly
read over the Medical Informed Consent for the program you will be taking part in, as there will be
detailed instructions on what you can and cannot do before and after taking a psychedelic
medicine with us.

Though you must carefully read over the specific rules for your treatment, here is a general
overview:
• You will need to refrain from eating for a certain amount of time before your psychedelic
experience to avoid nausea. This includes consuming beverages other than water. The
exact amount of time you must be without food varies by medicine.
• Refrain from alcohol, cannabis, or other intoxicating substances for at least 24 hours
before the session. In some cases, longer periods may be necessary to avoid decreasing
the effectiveness of the medicine.
• Continue to take prescription medications unless your Numinus care provider has
otherwise directed you.
• Alert your Numinus care provider if you have started any new prescription medications or
stopped any prescription medications since your medical screening visit and prior to your
first psychedelic experience.
• After your psychedelic experience, refrain from driving a car, riding a bicycle, or operating
machinery or heavy equipment until the day after your psychedelic treatment. You are
responsible for arranging transportation to and from the clinic on your days when you will
be treated with a psychedelic medicine. We recommend that your support person or
another trusted friend help with this.
• Follow all other steps outlined in the Medical Informed Consent for the treatment you are a
part of.
How to Prepare for the Psychedelic Experience
You may be familiar with the terms 'set' and 'setting' when talking about psychedelic
experiences. 'Set' is the mental state that you bring with you to the experience, and must be
carefully attended to in order to get the best from what the psychedelic medicine can offer you.
'Setting' refers to the physical environment where you spend your time during your psychedelic
experience. At Numinus, we have carefully created a setting in our clinics aimed to maximize your
experience by using calming visuals, comfortable furniture, music designed to guide your
experience, and caring clinical staff to ensure your safety and wellbeing. We also provide
eyeshades that you may choose to wear to allow yourself to sink deeper into the experience.
Getting the right mental set, though, takes a bit more work on your part.

Psychedelic experiences involve altered states of consciousness that may unveil emotions,
memories, and ways of thinking about things that have previously been hidden from your
consciousness. Entering this new territory may feel intimidating, but the possibility for
breakthrough and healing has likely fueled your courage to come this far. Research has shown that
your set or mindset can make a difference in your experience, and is affected by how you prepare
before the experience itself.
We want you to feel as supported as possible, so we have prepared a list of things you can
start right now to help you develop a beneficial mindset for your healing journey. Though the
information here cannot replace the value of a trained therapist, it is still important content that
will help you throughout your healing journey at Numinus and beyond, ensuring that you enter your
psychedelic experience with a mental set that may allow for better healing outcomes.
1. Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the knowledge that “this is how it is, right now.” People have been
practising mindfulness for thousands of years, and it is central to many spiritual systems and
traditional forms of wisdom. Mindfulness can refer to a contemplative state of mind or being, but it
can also be a very deliberate practice. Practising mindfulness involves non-judgmental curiosity
about the elements of our moment-to-moment experience: our thoughts, emotions, and physical
sensations. This allows us to be consciously aware of our experience as it is happening.
Mindfulness helps us learn to pay closer attention to what we are experiencing, often
becoming aware of aspects of experience that we otherwise ignore due to habit. Mindfulness helps
us learn to stay present for both pleasant and unpleasant experiences, helping us to develop a
sense of staying in balance no matter what happens.
Healing happens in the present moment; mindfulness also helps us tune in to the inner
healing process of our body to allow this to unfold naturally. Through practising mindfulness, we
learn how to focus our attention, which can help build a sense of control and safety in our
moment-to-moment experience.
Finally, it helps us to learn to be curious and open to new experiences.
In the days leading up to your psychedelic experience, it could be useful to practise
mindfulness for at least 10 minutes each day to help train your brain into an open and presentmoment–oriented mindset. An easy way is to set a timer and find a comfortable position such as
sitting, lying down, or mindfully walking. Then, simply follow the sensations of your own natural

breath and body, such as the feeling and sound of the air moving in and out of your body and
sensations that help you notice where your body is in space, like points of contact with your
clothing, the ground, or furniture. Each time the mind wanders into thinking, simply notice this and
gently return your attention to breath and body sensations. Allow the thoughts to slide off of you
like water slides off of a duck. If some sensations are unpleasant, you can try staying open and
curious towards them; you can also shift your attention to see if there are other areas of pleasant
or neutral sensations. This practice will familiarize you with the content of the mind and your
ability to anchor yourself within your breath and bodily sensations.
2. Embodiment
Embodiment involves listening to the felt sense of your body. Put simply, this means using
mindfulness to notice sensations from within yourself. Some areas may feel numb, others may
hold tension, others may feel open and relaxed. Body sensations are always changing, and it is
useful to be able to track these changes across time and across situations.
Though we all have the ability to listen to our bodies, many of us learn to disconnect from
these felt experiences when we are in situations that are painful for us to be present in. Part of
embodiment involves working past this to get back in touch with your own physical sensations.
Since your body holds all information from your life—both past and present—listening to
your body is a powerful way to connect with your own inner healing ability and to allow this to
guide you both during your psychedelic experience and through the work you do outside of it. With
the assistance of a psychedelic medicine, areas of the body that hold pain can be brought to
awareness with more ease. Consciously linking your experiences to the felt senses in your body
can help you sustain any insights, value clarifications, internal shifts, and committed actions that
are revealed to you during the psychedelic experience.
As with any other skill, embodiment can be improved with practice. To work on
embodiment, it may be a good idea to explore some physical practices before your sessions, such
as trying some yoga poses or sequences at home to see how your body feels when you flow
through certain movements. Embodiment practices like intuitive dance and other movement
practices like Tai Chi or Qi Gong may also be useful, and can help to centre your body awareness
while allowing expression through movement, acting as tools to encourage growth before and after
your psychedelic experience. Movement serves as an important way of allowing our emotions to

flow and for us to express ourselves, and may be deeply beneficial for our embodiment ability, as
well as for our emotional wellbeing.
3. Intention
An intention is a goal that you have for your psychedelic experience that is personally
meaningful. Setting an intention is like pointing yourself in your chosen direction of growth while
also accepting that you may come across new perspectives along the way that may shift your path.
Essentially, it is like a compass that will guide you throughout your psychedelic experience.
The process of setting an intention helps you begin to connect with what you value most
and with an awareness that you are an active participant in your healing journey—the most
important one of all. Your own inner healing process is what has brought you this far; setting your
intention helps you tap into this part of you. Having an intention is about understanding that while
you cannot know exactly what will happen in your psychedelic experience, you can aim in a general
direction anyway and play a role in your future. An intention can also be an anchor to remember
and return to while you are in your psychedelic experience, bringing focus to what is important to
you.
Although you may feel like bringing a long list of intentions with you, it can be best to stay
focused and to choose perhaps one or two that feel important to you and your life right now. These
intentions should be short and specific—the simpler, the better. Think about what intention would
be strongest for you in this present moment and see your intention as an anchor that you can
come back to. A simple intention is often best, such as naming something that you are hoping to
learn about, or receive help or guidance with—like love, fear, anger, forgiveness, or other core
human experiences.
When crafting your intentions, you may want to start with rough drafts of them and refine
them over time. It may also be useful to start out with a broad statement of your hopes or goals
and to then narrow this down, bit by bit, until you have a very specific intention for your
psychedelic experience. It is important to keep your intentions reasonable, while also trying to
word them in such a way where you remain an active agent within them.
Some example intentions may be:
• An experience of deep transformative healing (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual)
• An opportunity to experience and explore the potential of your true self
• An opportunity to revisit and reclaim parts of yourself
• An opportunity to unlock gifts and/or creativity
• A breakthrough in a particular area of your life where you have felt stuck
• An opening in your heart that may allow you to experience love
• An embodied experience of compassion and forgiveness towards yourself
• A genuine feeling of compassion and care for others, an experience of deeper connection
with yourself and others
Think about what intention would be the strongest for you at this point in your life and
direct your energy there. Clarify the healing that you are hoping to achieve and begin to identify
some possible roadblocks that may be preventing you from reaching your wellness goals.
4. Connecting With Your Personal Resources
A personal resource could be anything that creates a sense of peace, connection, or
security within you when you think of it. This may be a special memory; a particular piece of art or
music; a beloved pet, mentor, friend, or ancestor; special objects, plants, animals, or places; or a
spiritual figure, for example.
During your treatment, you may revisit challenging memories and experiences. Personal
resources can help you in these challenging moments if and when you need support. Personal
resources are more effective when you take the time to get a sense of how you feel in your body
when you think of them. In fact, some resources may be purely physical, for example using a
breathing technique that you have learned previously to calm your mind and body. If you are in a
treatment with therapy, the therapist will teach you some such techniques that may also serve as
therapeutic rituals to help bring consistency to your experience. For treatments without therapy,
you may wish to add on sessions with a therapist to help learn some of these skills.
You can try to identify some of your own personal resources by creating a list of some that
come to mind for you from the examples above; pay attention to how you feel in your body when
you think about them. Write down any that feel particularly supportive—you may notice sensations
of warmth, relaxation, spaciousness, or ease in your body. If you are working with a therapist, you
are encouraged to share and explore these with them so they can assist you in returning to these
resources if and when it is helpful to do so.
In identifying your own personal resources, you may be able to gain more security in your
experiences, and can learn to draw upon your resources as a matter of habit, allowing you to more
easily go through difficult emotions, feelings, or situations that may have been more challenging
for you in the past.
What is important here is that these resources be very familiar to you and that you practise
calling on them. Though it can be easy to think of these resources when you are feeling well, it is
more difficult to remember to use them when you may be under stress or in an unpleasant
situation or emotional state. Practising calling on your personal resources can help turn this into a
habit, allowing you to more easily think to do this while in distress.
5. Journaling and Sketching
Journaling and sketching can be excellent practices for self-reflection. These involve
writing down or drawing your thoughts and feelings so that you may be able to understand them
more clearly. A particular benefit of journaling is being able to get the thoughts that you might be
stuck on out of your head. You can generate a record of them that you can then revisit at a time of
your own choosing.
Journaling can be especially helpful with setting your intentions prior to your psychedelic
experience, helping you to identify key points, and solidify your thoughts. This will also help you to
generate prompts on your core experiences that you can discuss with a therapist or mindfully
think on yourself.
Though we are only talking about journaling and sketching here, there may be other forms
of artistic expression that can help you. You may wish to paint, or even use very different forms
such as dance, knitting, cooking, writing music... the list is truly endless. What is important is that
you engage in an activity that allows you to put your feelings out before you in a way that will let
you analyze and examine them, granting you better insight. For some of these other mediums, it
may be useful to combine them with journaling. For example, you might make a sculpture to
represent some of your feelings and then put a photo of it into a journal where you then write
about the experience, including the thoughts and feelings it brought up for you, as well as the
bodily sensations you felt. If you feel safe doing so, you may want to do this activity with other
people you trust, such as close friends and family members. Their own reflections may also give
you new insight into your own inner world.
No matter how you go about this, consider taking some time to record your reflections in
the week leading up to your psychedelic experience, as well as throughout the treatment process.
How to Integrate the Psychedelic Experience
Integration is the key process of rebuilding and rewiring ourselves with new knowledge and
realizations from the psychedelic experience. Breakthroughs can be deep and meaningful when
they happen, but without integrating them, you may return to old patterns. As a result, integration
work is incredibly important during treatment with psychedelics. If you imagine your psychedelic
experience as building a new mental home for yourself, integration is what keeps this home in
good shape, painting it to protect it from the weather, weeding the garden to keep it beautiful, and
reinforcing the foundation to make sure it will not fall down when a challenging wind comes.
Integration work happens after a psychedelic experience, and aims to anchor your
transformative insights and emotional breakthroughs. It is important to plan and follow through on
committed actions that will help you continue to integrate the changes that are important to you in
your daily life and relationships. Though you may choose to use our educational materials to do
your own integration work at home, it is important to note that this cannot replace the value of a
trained therapist guiding you through this process.
The first important step in integration is being aware of its importance and that it plays an
active role in your healing. All of the preparation activities listed above will also help the process of
integration. Ultimately, you are your own unique authority on what works for you; it is important to
continually focus on what you can be doing right now to help with your intentions and to help you
heal.
During integration, it is important to consider:
• What was learned from the psychedelic experience?
• What were the main themes from the psychedelic experience?
• What (if anything) is different from before?
• What might the value of the psychedelic experience have been in relation to your
intentions, your values, or to your life in the future?
• How can you make your intentions a reality? What actions do you need to take to do so?
What can you learn from these actions?
• How can you create time to reflect on the psychedelic experience?
• Are there any body sensations (either pleasant or unpleasant) that feel new or different, or
that come to the surface when you think about the psychedelic experience?

It is important to begin the process of integration immediately after your psychedelic
treatment, while the experience is still fresh in your memory; since psychedelic medicines allow for
your brain to more easily adapt and change, it is also important to do this work while your brain is
still more open to reworking itself as a result of the medicine's effects.
Ultimately, the goal of this integration is change that lasts. Healing comes by changing
what harms us, and failure to change may leave us stuck in a rut. The aim is to develop habits and
actions that are aligned with our goals and values, which we may already be aware of or that may
become clear after a psychedelic experience.
Some ways of solidifying the changes into your life include:
• Starting new practices that support your change, such as doing yoga every morning, taking
time to read a favourite book before bed, or carving out time in your day for any other
activity that you feel supports you.
• Scheduling time into your day for reflection and to focus on your change and ensure you
are not returning to old ways.
• Exploring meaning in your daily life, such as through journaling and artistic expression.
• Taking time to practise gratitude for your healing experience with the psychedelic
medicine, but also for the people and elements of your life that you value.
• Developing a concrete plan with achievable actions that will allow you to continue growing
with the change that your psychedelic experience may have sparked.
• You may wish to choose an item and associate it with your change during treatment and
use it as a reminder of where you were and where you have progressed to, also reminding
you of what direction you must continue in.
• You may wish to meet and talk with others who have experienced psychedelic healing to
gain insight into how others keep their change alive and growing. Your Numinus clinical
team may be able to suggest some such opportunities both at Numinus and in your
community.
Finishing the Treatment
When beginning one of the psychedelic treatments at Numinus, it is important to
remember that this is a treatment that is not meant to last forever. Though it may be intimidating
to think of finishing a significant healing step and returning to your life with new insight and skills,
the ability to move forward in life is of great importance. For those in treatments involving therapy,
you may have a Closing Session with your therapist to help guide you out of the treatment, helping
you to establish where you go from here.
If you choose to withdraw from the treatment before the end for whatever reason, you do
not need to complete any remaining sessions. You have the right to end treatment at any time. It is
also possible that the Numinus team might elect to end the treatment early if we feel that it is not
in your best interest to continue, either for medical reasons or otherwise. If that is the case, you
will be given clear reasons as to why, as well as our recommendations for next steps.
After Treatment
After your treatment, it is important to celebrate your work that allowed you to get to this
point. It can be helpful to think about integrating your experiences from the psychedelic treatment
as an ongoing process. At the end of the treatment, you will be provided with additional
information about staying connected; information materials about other related programs and
support will be provided. Though our psychedelic treatments at Numinus may be a significant step
in your healing journey, it is important to remember that healing and wellness are lifelong paths of
active work rather than final destinations.
Until then, the Numinus community and your clinical team are here to support you.
