Erase NJ Schools Lunch Debt

Don protégé
NO CHILD SHOULD GO HUNGRY AT SCHOOL

2020 UPDATE:
Hello Everyone. Thank you all for your donations and help! With a change of leadership in the past year, Lunch Crisis has been working diligently to raise more money to end lunch shaming across NJ. We recently made a donation of over $17,000 to Montclair School District which will hopefully help almost 500 families with their lunch debt. Montclair School District was very grateful, and we were very excited to help!

Thank you all again,
Tanmayee Talla (President)

HOW THE DONATIONS WILL BE USED:

The funds will be directly withdrawn to Srinivasa Talla. Next, Lunch Crisis will identify schools that have children with outstanding lunch debt. I, Keertana Talla, will determine the schools we would like to direct the funds to. Just as we have donation over $15,000 to the Englewood and Montclair school districts, we will continue to make donations to various NJ school districts.

STORY:

As someone who has experienced the public school lunch system, I can attest to the fact that it is vital for students to have access to a nutritious lunch to help them through their school day. In several schools across America, a child's hot meal is replaced with a cold sandwich when the child's family cannot afford to pay for their meal. The cold sandwich often comes with embarrassment and lunch shaming, which often leads children to stop eating altogether. "Holding children publicly accountable for unpaid school lunch bills — by throwing away their food, providing a less desirable alternative lunch or branding them with markers — is often referred to as “lunch shaming.”

The most upsetting aspect of this situation is that the student's lunch debt can follow them through high school and eventually get in the way of them graduating and receiving a diploma.

PURPOSE:

The purpose behind this GoFundMe page is to raise enough money to pay off the lunch debts in local public schools in New Jersey. Eventually, I would like to impact all schools in New Jersey and bring change to the lunch systems. Together, we can bring change to many students daily lives and raise awareness!
