Please Support Erica Nix

Austin’s beloved Erica Nix, queer performance artist, relentless social justice activist, photographer, LGBTQIA, body positive activist personal trainer and entrepreneur needs our support right now.

On August 12th Erica's legs began to go numb. She began seeing different doctors who gave incorrect diagnoses until finally her symptoms were identified as Multiple Sclerosis. It took 3 months to get the infusions she needed to control these flare ups. Fortunately, the nerves in her legs are almost completely recovered. However, 4 days before her first infusion of drugs she began having new episodes that took most of the sight in her right eye. MS is unpredictable and you really never know when you will recover from something or if the nerve damage is permanent. Erica has not been able to drive the last 2 months due to these symptoms. Stress is a huge contributing factor in her flare-ups, and she has had to turn down jobs in order to lower her stress levels. She has also been grieving her divorce during the pandemic on top of everything else. Stress has been challenging to manage.

Erica has lost a lot of income since the pandemic hit and even more since the onset of her MS symptoms. She is currently working on becoming an Airbnb host to help her pay rent ($1,200 a month), but there are some expensive hoops to jump through to begin this business. Treatment for her illness is not cheap. In addition to frequent doctor visits and expensive medications ($700-$900 a month), she also needs special supplements ($150 a week) and tons of organic vegetables. Her grocery bills now total to $800 a month. She pays for acupuncture and psychotherapy once a week, and sometimes more frequently when she is experiencing MS symptoms.

Erica has been told that the medication could take up to a year to begin working and she is trying her best to understand what she is physically capable of doing for work under these new circumstances. This might mean a new career. We are raising funds to pay for her MS treatment, current hospital bills and the anticipated ER visits ahead, Airbnb permits, rent, health insurance, to supplement lost income.

There are ways you can help out if you are not able to donate. At this time, Erica is still able to teach workout classes remotely 3 times a week through her Patreon account. She would love to see more people join her and her co-facilitator, Rocky, in these fun workouts. There are many different payment options including a $1 workout for BIPOC.  Find out how to join in the fun here: https://www.patreon.com/workoutwithericanix/posts

Erica Nix has been a bright and raucous force in the Austin community for well over a decade. Her performance art, beloved photography, and work as a queer and trans-inclusive, body positive activist and personal trainer is well-documented: from the multitude of activist rallies and demonstrations she’s supported, to being a regularly featured artist at OUTsider Fest and aGLIFF, to winning an Austin Critics Table Award in 2016 for best independent project, Best Personal Trainer Award in 2017 and 2018. She was even the focus of a feature in Texas Monthly this past September as "the workout Queen of Quarantine"! Recently Nix closed her studio Transform Fitness, one of the only LGBTQIA-focused gyms in the country, but her mission remains strong. Erica Nix is an ambassador of fitness and self love to people that feel unlovable, invisible, or simply intimidated by normative culture. Erica always collaborates with the dancers that come to her workout class. It’s proven to be very fulfilling for self-esteem and community growth.
