Erica's PhD Funding for Trinity College Dublin
Donation protected
Hi y’all! My name is Erica and I am a 30 year old Florida native. I was just accepted into the Geology PhD program at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, and I could not be more excited! I will be researching the effects of changing ocean properties and microplastics on deep-sea cold water corals. My end goal is to become a college professor, teaching and engaging the minds of students in the field of science as I continue to follow my passion of celebrating our beautiful ocean and researching our changing planet.
Over the past four years I was a full-time student and full-time employee at Florida Gulf Coast University. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Science and a Minor in Geology in December 2016. During my studies, I helped spearhead the Marine Science Student Ambassador Program, had the opportunity to present my research at 4 national conferences, and be a part of three major research projects. I have since completed a Master of Science in Environmental Science researching the upper-ocean responses from major hurricane impacts in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea.
I have never really been one to ask for help or handouts, but here I am. I will be moving to Ireland in August to attend my orientation and get acclimated to my research facility, but I still have some loose ends to tie up in Florida before I depart. I was awarded scholarship funding for the first year of my four-year program at Trinity College, and will be applying for grants and fellowships for the following three years once I am in Ireland and applications open in the fall. This means that I will have some out-of-pocket expenses for the first few months until I am settled in. I started this GoFundMe page to request financial support to get me to Ireland as well as helping me pay off some outstanding bills including car repairs and my sweet Coco’s surgery from a few years back (my beloved chocolate lab of 11 years).
I will have to show proof of health insurance and sustainability in the minimum amount of $3600 to be allowed to stay in Ireland even with having a scholarship for the first year of my PhD research. The cost of my flight for this time of year and moving expenses such as shipping of clothes and living necessities will be around $5000. My school funding will not come through until the semester begins on September 9, so I will need to support myself for a month before the semester begins as well. I know I am asking for quite a lot here (and you may not even know me), but I have faith that whatever I need to continue this journey that God has me on, will be provided.
The Good Lord has tremendously blessed me with this opportunity to pursue my dreams and continue my education and I know that there is an even larger purpose attached with my move to Ireland. If you cannot contribute monetarily, I ask that you please keep me in your prayers as I take on this next step, and pass my page along. I am prepared to take on a new culture and a new adventure, and I am looking forward to experiencing how God is going to use me in this next season!
