Erica's Surgery Funds

Donation protected
In May 2016, our friend Erica Campanella was diagnosed with a large tumor in her pituitary gland. She was told that surgery was the only course of action. Although the tumor is considered noncancerous, her particular form of tumor results in vision loss, physical disfigurement, and stroke if not removed. The required surgery also carries significant risks- damage to the pituitary which can result in a lifetime of hormone replacements. While struggling with her diagnosis Erica has also had to battle her insurance company to pay for this life saving surgery.

As a self employed Rhode Island illustrator, Erica had purchased what she thought was one of the more comprehensive healthcare plans offered through United Healthcare. She assumed that obtaining the proper care would not be a problem. Erica's form of tumor is very rare and being operated on by doctor specializing in its treatment would greatly improve Erica's long term prognosis. There are no doctors in her state that specialize in pituitary tumors exclusively. Luckily, Boston has two of the best pituitary centers in the country and is only an hour away.

Unfortunately, Erica has had 2 scheduled surgery dates in Boston canceled. She was told on both occasions she had obtained the required approvals only to learn her health insurance would not cover her consultations or the actual surgical procedure. All of Erica's Rhode Island doctors wrote to United of her behalf stressing the necessity of her having surgery with a specialist like those located in Boston. But still her insurance has been refusing to pay, insisting that they will only pay for a RI neurosurgeon even though none are as experienced as the Boston doctors in this particular surgery.

Left with no other option, Erica has had to switch to another insurance carrier. In doing so, she takes on a new deductible in addition to her original deductible plus all the out-of-pocket costs for the two Boston visits she was initially told were covered and were not. As a self-employed artist, Erica also faces a month of recovery without the benefit of disability insurance.

Between the out-of-pocket expenses, insurance deductibles, and lost income the conservatively estimate of Erica's expenses is $10 - $12,000.

Individually, it is difficult to help our friend through this very challenging period of her life. Collectively, we are hoping we can make a difference. We know there are many of you who love Erica as much as we do and many more who know what it's like to be covered by insurance but vulnerable when faced with a real health crisis.

Please share this with your network of awesome people - Erica is scheduled for surgery on September 21st and greatly appreciates your support and well wishes!
