17 years ago I arrived in Friday Harbor Airport and found an old unused building that at one time was the first passenger terminal for Friday Harbor Airport. It was declining through age and non-use. I felt that the building should be preserved as a historical monument to Mr. Roy Franklin and his undaunted courage to serve this community both for passenger service and aeromedical needs.
His many years of flying were instrumental in saving many lives. In fact without Dr. Heath and Roy Franklin our population over the years would have been decreased as many an expectant mother were flown off the Island to deliver their child in a real hospital. Mr. Franklin touched so many lives here. Maybe you were one of those Islanders who depended on Roy to take care of you. His extraordinary abilities as a pilot were challenged often due to the incredible poor weather during many months every year. I feel that this building should be preserved and continue to be a center point for aviation and community services as a museum, restaurant and aviation training for our Island youth.
I remodeled the building 17 years ago and it has become a local landmark. However over the years time has continued to ravage the building and now it needs some real upgrades. Our major concerns are the roof, flooring and heating system.
The building will house the Roy Franklin Museum, Ernest Gann Pilot Center and Ernie’s Cafe. A great deal of updating and remodeling have been completed and soon we will be open again. Help us preserve this very important piece of aviation history and the memory of an aviation icon, Mr Roy Franklin.
We all have a past. People who sacrifice their lives to make the community better need to be recognized and their achievements preserved. This building has been slated for demolition several times but only through the diligence of others and good luck does it remain. Soon there will be no other buildings left on this airport that were built by Mr. Franklin. We can not lose this one.
In order to save this building we need to request donations for a new floor, a new roof and a heating system. Thank you for your generosity and desire to preserve this very important historical building.
