RACING ARCTIC MAN

Hello! My name is Errol Kerr. I have been ski racing since I was 10 years old. In 2010 I competed in the Winter Olympics representing the land of my father, Jamaica. I finished 9th in skiercross. In April of that year, I competed in Arctic Man and finished 4th. It is my dream to compete in the Arctic Man again. It’s a very exciting race. I hoping to raise $2,150 to assist me on the trip. That would cover my travel, entry fee, food, ski wax and miscellaneous costs.   I already have a place to stay and a snowmobile driver to pull me.

WHAT IGNITED THE SPARK IN YOU TO START YOUR CAREER?

At the young age of 4 years old I started skiing, and I always enjoyed going fast, so naturally that lead me to racing. And as soon as I started racing, all I wanted to do was race in the Olympics, and be the best skier that I possibly could be.

WHAT KEEPS ME MOTIVATED IN DOING WHAT I DO?

My motivation comes strictly from the fact that I am not the best.  For me as a person, I always am striving to be better. I don’t think perfection is ever reached or seldom met, but you can always wake up and do better the next day. It’s that excitement you get of just doing something a little bit better or I guess just doing something differently and it turned out better, that keeps me going, and just always want to try new things and always push it that much farther the next time.

MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS OR HABITS THAT HAVE ASSISTED ME

I think my willingness to work. I enjoy working with my hands, and being outside and moving. I have never been one that has enjoyed sitting still and watching the world pass me by. I would say those are the habits that have really assisted me and propelled me to the level that I’ve made it today.

A PIONEER

I think that, doing what I do, I feel like I am pioneering. I think you gotta dig deep and find something of your own. That is what all great pioneers and seekers and risk takers do. When you are charting in territory that hasn’t been charted yet, there is not really a a map to follow or anyone else that’s done it that you can ask their opinion on it.

LEAVE IT ALL ON THE HILL

When you are out racing, or doing whatever you do in life, leave it all on the hill. That way, you can leave the hill happy. Even if you win or lose, you know that you did everything you could. You didn’t hold back in any way, or leave something behind. That’s something that I think you can use in all aspects of life. It’s that whatever you are doing, do all that you can, and when it’s over, it’s over.

MY MOST SATISFYING MOMENT AND ACHIEVEMENT:

Is obviously the Olympics. One, qualifying and making it there. And two, coming 9th in the ski cross, that’s top 10 in the world. For the rest of my life, I will have gotten 9th in the Olympics, and there’s very few people that can say that.

INFORMATION FROM THE ARCTIC MAN WEBSITE:

The Arctic Man is a race for teams of two skilled competitors that tests the strength of an athlete and the horsepower of a snowmobile. Courage and training are essential elements of this team of snowmobile and skier.

The Arctic Man is one of the World's Toughest Downhill Ski races, and an exciting snowmobile race, all in one. The skier begins at a summit elevation of 5,800 feet and drops 1700 feet in less than two mile to the bottom of a narrow canyon where he meets up with his snowmobiling partner.

The snowmobiler meets the skier, on the go, with a tow rope and pulls the skier 2 1/4 miles uphill at top speeds of up to 86 mph. The skier and the snowmobile then separate and the skier goes over the side of the second mountain and drops another 1200 feet to the finish line.

At the Arctic Man you "GO FAST or GO HOME"

Truly the Ultimate Adrenaline Rush for spectators and competitors alike.

Last year approximately 13,000 spectators came from around the nation as well as different countries around the world to enjoy this spectacular Alaskan event. The area the race is held is some the of the best snowmachine riding country in the world.  The snowcapped peaks and beauty make this spring event one that you will treasure for a lifetime.
